Spain v Cape Verde preview: La Roja can lay down an early marker
By James Milton Spain defeated some of Europe's strongest football nations on their way to victory at Euro 2024 but they face a very different challenge in their World Cup opener.
La Roja were crowned European champions two years ago after beating Germany in the quarter-finals, France in the semis and Gareth Southgate's England in the final. On Monday, though, they take on World Cup debutants Cape Verde, before Group H fixtures against Saudi Arabia and Uruguay. The draw has been kind to Luis de la Fuente's side, who should make a strong start to their campaign against one of the tournament outsiders.
In 2010, Spain lost their opening group game to Switzerland before going on to lift the trophy in South Africa but anything other than a comprehensive victory in Atlanta would be a major surprise. De la Fuente has barely put a foot wrong since taking charge of La Roja following their last-16 exit against Morocco at the 2022 World Cup. As well as their Euro 2024 triumph, Spain have reached the last two Nations League finals, beating Croatia on penalties in 2023 and losing to Portugal in a shootout last summer.
They are unbeaten in 31 competitive internationals and eased through World Cup qualifying, winning their first five games by an aggregate score of 19-0. That run included a sizzling 6-0 victory over a talented Turkey side in September and 4-0 victories over Bulgaria in October and Georgia in November. The 4-0 Spain win looks a good bet in the correct-score market on Monday. De la Fuente is confident that key wingers Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams will be fit for the first game, although he may not risk them from the start.
Even so, Spain's outstanding midfield should help them dominate possession in energy-sapping conditions and Cape Verde face a giant step up in class. Bubista's men topped their qualifying group, conceding only eight goals in ten matches, and Villarreal centre-back Logan Costa has recovered from a serious knee injury. Apart from Costa, however, there is little top-level experience in the Cape Verde squad and their success in qualifying was based on an excellent home record.
A 1-0 win over a star-studded Cameroon side was the pick of their results but they had lost 4-1 in the reverse fixture earlier in the campaign. Forwards Ryan Mendes, Garry Rodrigues and Nuno da Costa are all aged 35 or older and it is hard to see Cape Verde landing a blow on Spain's defence. While Yamal and Williams are fitness doubts, Mikel Oyarzabal should lead the line for La Roja and he looks a good bet to score first.
Oyarzabal scored Spain's last goal at a major tournament - the late winner in the Euro 2024 final against England - and he may well open their account at the World Cup. He was their joint-leading scorer in qualifying, finding the net six times, and had a good season for Real Sociedad, scoring 18 goals in 35 starts in La Liga and the Copa del Rey.
