Our Prediction

With a showdown with South Africa to come, a draw would not be a bad outcome for South Korea or Czech Republic in their Group A opener. However, the Czechs look well-suited to tournament football and their physicality and threat from dead-ball situations make them the most likely victors.

South Korea vs Czech Republic Match Preview

Written By Aaron Ashley

South Korea's Group A duel with Czech Republic in the early hours of Friday morning is the first opportunity for World Cup diehards to pull their first all-nighter of the finals.

Given the tournament's expansion, both nations will be eyeing up a place in the knockout rounds and victory at the Estadio Guadalajara would tee them up nicely.

South Korea are making their 11th consecutive finals appearance and they made the round of 16 in Qatar in 2022, when they finished above Uruguay and Ghana in their group before losing 4-1 to Brazil in the last 16.

There has been plenty of change since then. Paulo Bento stepped down following their exit and his replacement, German football icon Jurgen Klinsmann, lasted only a year at the helm before being replaced by Hong Myung-Bo.

A former defender for the Taegeuk Warriors, Hong presided over an unbeaten qualifying campaign but he has yet to win over all of South Korea's fans.

His ponderous attacking approach has been criticised and a switch to a 3-4-3 system has been questioned given the lack of suitable wing-backs available to him.

There is a reliance on former Tottenham talisman Son Heung-Min and Paris Saint-Germain's Lee Kang-In to provide attacking impetus and Bayern Munich centre-back Kim Min-Jae to shore things up at the back.

However, Korea's midfield is a definite weakness and they should expect a physical battle against the Czech Republic in Mexico.

The Czechs are back at a World Cup for the first time since 2006 after they qualified via the playoffs. They finished second to Croatia in Group L of Uefa qualifying but saw off Ireland and Denmark in penalty shootouts to secure their place in North America.

Miroslav Koubek's disciplined approach and compact style is well-suited to tournament football and set-pieces could be key given the size and stature of his squad.

Bayer Leverkusen's towering forward Patrik Schick is the focal point of the Czechs' attack, Tomas Soucek and Vladimir Darida provide muscle and tenacity in midfield, while Robin Hranac is joined by Ladislav Krejci, a rare bright spark for Wolves this season, at the back.

There is a balanced look to Koubek's squad, albeit it lacks a standout creator, and the Czechs are a tough nut to crack, having lost only two of their last 19 matches.

South Korea warmed up for the finals with wins over Trinidad & Tobago and El Salvador, but they were beaten 1-0 by Austria and 4-0 by Ivory Coast in March and they may find chances hard to come by in the face of Koubek's pragmatism.

The Czechs' organisation, physicality and set-piece threat may give them the edge in Guadalajara.

South Korea vs Czech Republic Best Bets

Ladislav Krejci Anytime Goalscorer — 23/2

Defender Ladislav Krejci was one of the few bright sparks for Wolves in what was a dismal Premier League campaign, and he had a huge hand in Czech Republic's World Cup qualification, scoring in playoff wins over Ireland and Denmark to take his tally to five goals in 27 caps.

Czech Republic to win — 33/20

Czech Republic battled past Republic of Ireland and Denmark on penalties to qualify for the World Cup and just two defeats in their last 19 matches is further evidence that they could be well-suited to tournament football. Strong organisation and their physical attributes make them the most likely winners in this Group A curtain-raiser.

Bet Builders

Bet Builder 1 — 13/1 (£10 returns £140.00)

Selection

Reasoning

Patrik Schick over 0.5 shots on target

Schick is the focal point of Czech Republic's attack and scored six goals in his final six outings in the Bundesliga for Bayer Leverkusen

Under 3.5 goals

A first match at a World Cup is often cagey and a draw wouldn't be a bad result for either side

Robin Hranac to be shown a card

The Czech centre-back collected five yellow cards in 29 appearances for Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga this term and may overstep the mark

Son Heung-min over 2.5 shots

The South Korea star has had ten shots across his last two friendlies and will be desperate to make an impact

Bet Builder 2 — 25/1 (£10 returns £260.00)

Selection

Reasoning

Czech Republic or draw double chance

The Czechs have lost only two of their last 19 matches and in a tight encounter their defensive organisation and physicality could be key

Vladimir Coufal over 0.5 fouls

The Czech Republic right-back made 33 fouls in 34 appearances for Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga this season

Son Heung-min over 0.5 shots on target

Son remains South Korea's chief scoring threat and had ten shots in their final two warm-up wins over Trinidad & Tobago and El Salvador

Patrik Schick over 1.5 shots

Schick is the focal point of Czech Republic's attack and scored six goals in his final six outings in the Bundesliga for Bayer Leverkusen

Kang-in Lee to register an assist — 23/5

Robin Hranac to be shown a card — 5/2

The Czech centre-back picked up five bookings in 29 starts for Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga this season and was booked in the penalty-shootout success over Ireland in the World Cup playoff semi-finals.

The former Tottenham star remains the focal point of South Korea's attack and had seven shots in a recent 5-0 friendly triumph over Trinidad & Tobago, scoring twice.
