Brazil v Morocco preview: Bruno good to go in entertaining Group C opener

Brazil, arguably the nation most associated with the World Cup, start their quest for a record-extending sixth world title against 2022 semi-finalists Morocco on Saturday.
For the first time in their history, the Selecao will be led into the tournament by a non-Brazilian after managerial great Carlo Ancelotti took charge last year.
Ancelotti was Italy's assistant when the Azzurri lost the final of USA 94 to Brazil on penalties and, after a storied career as a club coach, he took his first international job in May 2025.
For those with longer memories, Group C has a familiar feel, with Morocco and Scotland also drawn in Brazil's pool at France 98. Haiti fill the final berth.
The Moroccans made history in Qatar in 2022 by becoming the first African team to reach the semi-finals of a World Cup. However, while they start this tournament with a deeper and more experienced squad, they do so under a cloud.
In January, they lost the Africa Cup of Nations final to Senegal, but subsequently received the trophy after the Lions of Teranga walked off in protest following a controversial penalty awarded to the hosts.
Head coach Walid Regragui has since departed and been replaced by Mohamed Ouahbi. Regragui also took charge at short notice before the 2022 World Cup, and that is not their only similarity. Like Regragui, Ouahbi was born in Europe but is of Moroccan parentage.
In fact, only six members of the squad grew up in Morocco and, as in 2022, they present an intriguing tactical proposition.
The Atlas Lions have excellent attackers but are tactically adept and will aim to frustrate Brazil, who are trying to find balance.
Ancelotti believes a 4-2-4 is his team's best way of playing, but a lack of full-back options has been exacerbated by Wesley's injury in the final warm-up match, a 2-1 win over Egypt.
That result came after a 6-2 victory over Panama and both teams have scored in Brazil's last five games, the last four of which have featured at least three goals.
Morocco's final friendly was a 1-1 draw against Norway, a fixture that represented a step up in class after beating Burundi 5-0 and Madagascar 4-0.
They also played South American opposition in March, drawing 1-1 with Ecuador before recording a 2-1 win over Paraguay.
Saturday's match in New Jersey promises entertainment between the sides most likely to take the two automatic qualification places in Group C.
Brazil's tactical framework makes them vulnerable and Morocco can contribute to the game's goal tally.
The Selecao are still the favourites and have recently been powered by big performances from Bruno Guimaraes.
Paired with Casemiro in midfield, Bruno has a licence to get involved in attacking play and has provided three assists in six qualifying appearances.
He scored the opener against Egypt and can continue to grow into his role with the Selecao by registering another goal or assist and helping his country make a winning start in their quest for a sixth world title.
