Manchester United are planning formal talks with Michael Carrick about continuing as head coach beyond the summer, reports ESPN.
Carrick took over as United boss in January on a deal until the end of the season following Ruben Amorim’s exit at the turn of the year.
The initial plan was for the former Middlesbrough head coach to lead the club until the culmination of the 2025-26 campaign before assessing their managerial options.
Carrick has shone as United boss
However, Carrick has exceeded expectations in charge of the Manchester giants, guiding them to the Champions League following their recent 3-2 win over rivals Liverpool.
Along with victory against the Reds, Carrick has also overseen impressive wins over Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea, which has boosted his reputation at the club.
And United bosses feel the 45-year-old has done enough to warrant talks with the club’s decision makers to continue in the role.
United will go through the process to appoint a long-term head coach accordingly, but there is a general consensus that relieving Carrick of his duties in the summer would do more harm than good.
Man Utd set for big summer
It’s imperative that United have a managerial plan firmly in place ahead of a decisive summer.
Indeed, United are prioritising a new central midfielder and a left winger in the summer transfer window, while a new centre-back and left-back also rank high on the club’s wishlist.
Aurelien Tchouameni and Adam Wharton are among the central midfielders to have been linked with a move to Old Trafford.
