Southampton remain on the hunt for a new manager after Will Still’s recent sacking but interim boss Tonda Eckert guided them to a much-needed victory at QPR on Wednesday and will be expected to make it two from two at home to Championship basement boys Sheffield Wednesday.

The Saints have struggled to adapt to life in the Championship following last season’s relegation from the Premier League and find themselves 19th in the table, having taken only a paltry 15 points from 14 games.

But Southampton’s troubles are not a patch on those of Sheffield Wednesday, who are already looking destined for the drop having been deducted 12 points after filing for administration.

The Owls, now on -4 points at the foot of the table, are 17 points adrift of safety and just one win this season suggests they may find it difficult to turn the corner at St Mary's.

Team news

Southampton may opt for an unchanged side from their midweek victory over QPR, with Shea Charles, Elias Jelert, Samuel Edozie and Ross Stewart all still on the sidelines.

Cameron Archer and Ryan Fraser also missed Wednesday’s win and, while nearing a return, this clash with the Owls may come too soon.

Wednesday have a crowded treatment room which includes Pierce Charles, Di'Shon Bernard, Nathaniel Chalobah, Olaf Kobacki and George Brown.

Young talents Rio Shipston, Guilherme Siqueira and Ernie Weaver are also still sidelined.

The stats

Southampton have won each of their last four league games against Sheffield Wednesday, having completed a league double over them in the Championship in 2023-24.

After the midweek 2-1 victory over QPR, Southampton will be aiming for back-to-back league wins for the first time since April 2024.

The Saints have kept only one clean sheet in their last 10 matches.

Only Portsmouth (10) have scored fewer goals than Sheffield Wednesday’s tally of 11 in the Championship this season.

However, Wednesday have failed to score in only one of their seven matches on the road this term.

Leo Scienza has scored two goals in his last three Championship games for Southampton, which includes the decisive strike against QPR.

Prediction

This is a match that Southampton can ill-afford to drop points in and they will be expected to add to Wednesday’s woes in front of their home supporters.

The midweek victory at QPR snapped a three-game losing streak for Saints and should have restored some confidence, while the Owls make the long trip winless in eight and having suffered four defeats in that spell.

So Southampton, still inheriting substantial top-flight quality, can reap the rewards but they are unlikely to make things easy for themselves.

The Saints have kept only one clean sheet in their last 10 matches and Wednesday have played with freedom on the road, scoring in all six away games prior to the recent goalless draw at West Brom.

Back Southampton to win and both teams to score at 41/20 with LiveScore Bet.
