Manchester City are one of the main clubs interested in Roma full-back Wesley as the plan a 'long-term refresh' on the right, reports Caught Offside.
Roma are believed to be facing a big battle for the services of right-back Wesley. The 22-year-old, who has five goals and two assists in all competitions this season, is reported to be on the radar of huge clubs such as Manchester City, Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Those are just the most prominent sides after him, with a host more Premier League sides named in pursuit: Newcastle are also said to have been impressed by him, while Arsenal and Tottenham are both linked.
It's City's interest which could have the most bearing on Wesley's future, though, with the report highlighting how Pep Guardiola likes defenders who can play in multiple roles, with the Brazilian potentially suiting that demand, given he can play as a right-back, or in a more advanced wide role on either flank.
Think Joao Cancelo, Rico Lewis, Josko Gvardiol and John Stones as defenders Guardiola has used in different roles during his time at City.
City want to refresh
The report states Wesley would make sense as part of a 'long-term refresh' at full-back for City. They saw Kyle Walker move on in the summer and have played Matheus Nunes in the position often this season, despite the former Wolves man primarily being a midfielder.
With Wesley under contract in Rome until 2030, having only signed from Brazilian side Flamengo in the summer, Roma are in a strong negotiating position, and it's therefore thought any deal would require a 'major offer.'
But if there's a side willing to pay large money to sign a star defender, it's City. Of their top 10 transfers of all time, four have been for defenders.
The most saw them shell £77.6million on Gvardiol, while even the lowest of the four most-expensive City defenders, Aymeric Laporte, cost £57million, back in 2018.
At the time, the Spain international became the most expensive defender in City's history, though that figure was eclipsed when they signed Joao Cancelo, then again when they landed Ruben Dias, and most recently when Gvardiol joined.
That makes one thing clear: if City want to sign Wesley, they will be signing him.
