The 2026 World Cup has been whittled down to 16 teams as we enter the business end of the tournament.

All three co-hosts - Canada, Mexico and USA - secured safe passage, as they beat South Africa, Ecuador and Bosnia-Herzegovina in their respective round-of-32 matches.

They’re joined at this stage by Morocco, Paraguay, France, Brazil, Norway, England, Spain, Portugal, Egypt, Switzerland, Belgium, Argentina and Colombia.

Canada kick-off the last-16 when they take on 2025 AFCON runners’ up Morocco as we run through the route to the final from this stage.

Left side of the draw

The Canucks won’t have home advantage to call upon when they face Morocco as they make the trip to Texas in a bid to progress past the Atlas Lions.

And the winner of the World Cup 2026 last-16 clash could face a potentially daunting task in the quarter-finals.

Paraguay did exceptionally well to overcome European powerhouse Germany on penalties in the round-of-32. However, they face a much tougher task in their quarter-final quest as they gear up to take on Kylian Mbappe and co. on Saturday night.

Co-hosts USA play their first post-Independence Day game when they face Belgium on Tuesday. The Red Devils left it late to overcome Senegal, a Youri Tielemans penalty enough to overcome the AFCON champions.

Saving the best until last, European giants Portugal and Spain lock horns to round off the left side of the draw. As fate would have it, there is the possibility of a semi-final meeting between France and Spain provided they make it through their respective last-16 and quarter-final outings.

Right side of the draw

On the other side of the draw, Brazil and Norway kick off the last-16 action in New York New Jersey on Sunday night as Gabriel Magalhaes and Erling Haaland resume their rivalry on the international stage.

The winner of their tie will face either co-hosts Mexico or England in the quarter-finals. There was some suggestion that this last-16 clash would be brought forward six hours due to a thunderstorm warning, though it’s since been confirmed that it would kick off at the original time [1am, UK time].

Switzerland and Colombia set up a last-16 clash as they got the better of respective African nations Algeria and Ghana.

Finally, defending champions Argentina meet Egypt in the next round, though both teams came close to respective exits.

The 2022 World Cup winners were taken to extra time by tournament debutants Cape Verde, and eventually progressed as they claimed a 3-2 win.

Egypt, meanwhile, overcame Australia on penalties to set up their clash with Argentina.

The South American powerhouse have, arguably, the more favourable run to the final, though there is the possibility they’ll face either Brazil or England in the semi-finals.
