Both Portsmouth and Oxford face a frantic scrap as they aim to avoid joining Sheffield Wednesday in next season’s League One and Monday’s meeting at Fratton Park could play a key role in deciding their fate.

The home side may be nervous after losing their last four league matches in front of their own fans, while Oxford have put up a fight in the last few weeks and will fancy their chances of getting something from their trip to the south coast after some decent away results.

Prediction

There are likely to be plenty of nerves at Fratton Park on Easter Monday as Portsmouth entertain Oxford in a massive chapter of the Championship relegation fight that gets more intriguing by the week.

Pompey are a point ahead of their opponents and just above the relegation zone, clinging to the fact they have a game in hand on their rivals, but there would be no better time for them to end a run of four straight defeats at their south-coast base.

Both of these teams average less than a goal a game, so a thriller is not anticipated, but it could be that the visitors have more to celebrate as Portsmouth slide further into trouble.

Oxford have lost one of their last six games in the league and that was at playoff-chasing Southampton, who are unbeaten in their last 12 second-tier matches, and there has been a notable improvement in their away performances.

They have won at Leicester and Preston and while those are the only two away victories they have mustered in their last 13 on their travels, goalless draws at leaders Coventry and promotion candidates Middlesbrough demonstrate that they know how to dig in.

Those results encourage the view that they may get something from their Fratton Park trip and give themselves a decent chance of escaping while worsening the plight of one of their rivals in the struggle.
