Charlton host Portsmouth on Saturday lunchtime as two teams badly struggling for form meet in the Championship at The Valley.

Team news

Amari’i Bell is a doubt for Charlton after going off in the defeat at Coventry on what was his return action after missing the previous two games through injury.

Reece Burke has been sidelined with a hamstring issue of late, while forward Charlie Kelman has not played for a month due to a muscle problem and Matty Godden is yet to appear this season.

New signing Jerome Roussilon, a former Wolfsburg and Union Berlin defender,is eligible to feature for Nathan Jones’ side.

Conor Shaughnessy, Connor Ogilvie and Jacob Farrell are unavailable for the visitors due to injury while Harvey Blair, Franco Umeh and Thomas Waddingham are also sidelined.

Portsmouth will be without Andre Dozzell as the midfielder is suspended after picking up a fifth yellow card of the season in the last game. However, Terry Devlin returns after serving a ban for a red card against Sheffield United.

The stats

Charlton are unbeaten in six games against Portsmouth, winning three and drawing three.

Portsmouth have drawn a blank and failed to score in five of their last seven matches.

The Addicks have conceded 11 goals in three matches and have kept just two clean sheets in eleven games.

Pompey edge things in the head-to-head record between these two teams, winning 41 league games to Charlton’s 39 — the sides first met in the league back in 1922 and last locked horns in the second tier in April 2000.

Prediction

Charlton lost just one game in September and October combined and were holding their own in the Championship. However, the Addicks have hit a nightmare run of form, losing four straight games in November and conceding 11 goals in three matches.

Manager Jones has admitted he is relishing a return to The Valley after two away games on the bounce and has an opportunity for a win against a Portsmouth side who dropped into the relegation zone after losing at home to Bristol City last weekend.

Charlton are 17th in the Championship, but the table is so tight the Addicks are just three points off 10th place, so can swiftly salvage their impressive start and bring the feel-good factor back to the club.

Portsmouth have lost six matches in eight and have not found the net in five of their last seven games. Therefore, Pompey head to the capital on Saturday as underdogs.

Despite Charlton’s recent struggles, backing the Addicks for the victory appears the smart move.
