2026 NBA Playoffs Eastern Conference Finals Preview and Prediction: Cleveland Cavaliers vs. New York Knicks

The Eastern Conference Finals begin tonight, and both teams are on the precipice of making franchise history. The Cleveland Cavaliers are trying to reach their first NBA Finals in team history without LeBron James. Meanwhile, the New York Knicks are hoping to win their first Eastern Conference title since 1999. No matter what happens, one of these groups will cement its place in franchise history, and maybe even NBA history.
The Knicks had no problem taking care of the Philadelphia 76ers in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, sweeping the Sixers in just four games. They killed Philly, winning each game by an average of 22.25 points. In their final game of the series, New York won on the road, 144-114.
“It's just a heck of a game by our guys. Their focus, their attention to detail while bringing energy and effort not just tonight but throughout the course of the series was at a pretty high level,” head coach Mike Brown said during the postgame press conference. “Closeout games are the hardest games to play because the level of desperation from the other team, especially when you're on the road, and you factor in your opponent's home crowd. I mean, I give our guys a lot of credit.”
The Knicks, who have won seven consecutive games, have had a historically good start to the postseason. New York has outscored its opponents by 194 points so far, which is the best point differential during a ten-game stretch in NBA playoff history.
“It's great when you see your team doing what we're doing and having that kind of focus and discipline and execution,” Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns said on May 10th. “I've always said that the toughest game is the one that ends someone's season, and to see us taking those words serious, it's great. It's great for us to see. But now we’ve gotta reset. We’ve gotta readjust, get our minds back right, enjoy this time with our family, and get back to business.”
The Cavaliers did not have as easy a time as the Knickerbockers did with their second-round playoff matchup. It took seven games, but Cleveland upset the East's number-one-seeded Detroit Pistons with a 125-94 victory on Sunday. That was the group's second Game Seven win this postseason.
“When we play with force, it's really the key,” Cavs head coach Kenny Atkinson said to members of the media after the Game Seven win. “That force on both ends, with our talent, we're really hard to beat… We can't have force let-downs like game six, where we were not the forceful team, but tonight we were. That was the whole difference; our force on both ends.”
A lot of credit has to go to Cleveland guard Donovan Mitchell, who finished the game with 26 points, eight assists, and six rebounds. He averaged 28.1 points per game during the series.
“He was better than Donovan Mitchell. Is that possible?” Atkinson joked. “It started with him. His defense, rebounding. When he gets in the paint and starts making other people better - the dishes, dish-offs to our big guys - that was a key, I felt like, to the game… I couldn't be happier for him to make that next step.”
Though this will be something of a homecoming for the New York-born Mitchell, he and the rest of the Cavs organization know that the Knicks present a unique set of challenges, considering how dominant they have been up to this point.
“It's going to be special, for sure. But, they are a talented team,” Mitchell told reporters over the weekend. “Obviously, it starts with Jalen Brunson and KAT, but Mikal (Bridges) and OG (Anunoby) have been phenomenal. Josh Hart, [too]. You look at their bench, that has been great.”
For New York, getting back on the court after a nine-day break is arguably its biggest concern. Thankfully, guard Josh Hart believes that the Knicks will get into a groove and find the momentum they had through the first two rounds of the playoffs.
“We’ve got to come in with toughness, physicality, [and] energy from the jump,” he said yesterday. “Obviously, that’s a very tough team. Two really good bigs, too. Really good ball handlers, playmakers, scorers. Then, you're surrounded with shooters. So I expect us to have a good attention to detail and effort level.”
“At the end of the day, we've had a chance to rest, too, and they've had to play 14 games in 29, 30 days,” Mike Brown explained. “It could go either way. You just hope that when we step out there, our competitive spirit is at an extremely high level, and we don't ease into the game at all because they're a dangerous, dangerous offensive team.”
Prediction for Cleveland Cavaliers (+210) vs. New York Knicks (-260)
As much as we want to use the regular-season series to preview how this thing might play out, we have to scrap those three games. Not only was the last matchup between these squads in late February, but James Harden only appeared in one of those contests since he was traded to Cleveland on February 4th. These teams have changed a lot since then.
New York and Cleveland's stats are somewhat skewed. The Knicks have been lights out in the postseason, but they're bound to regress a bit after the extended time off. Also, their averages aren’t sustainable. Teams in the 2026 NBA playoffs are shooting about 45.5% from the field, but the Knicks are making 51.7% of their shots. They're not going to have the same level of efficiency in this series because it’s just not realistic to expect a team to make more than half of its field goal attempts during a playoff run.
On the other side, the Cavaliers have an excellent offense, but they’ve had to face two of the best defensive teams in the playoffs, the Toronto Raptors and the Detroit Pistons. Cleveland will probably see its average scoring output increase, which would be impressive since it’s been putting up 110.4 points per game, the fourth-best mark in the 2026 NBA Playoffs.
New York's Jalen Brunson should have a field day in this series when you remember how much of a liability James Harden is as a defender. But, even if he or KAT were to have an off night, the Knicks have a ton of scoring depth and can get points from other guys like OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges, Josh Hart, or Deuce McBride. More importantly, New York is better than Cleveland in almost all meaningful offensive statistics, including points, field goal percentage, rebounds, assists, and three-point shooting. The Cavs lack the defensive prowess to win four games in this matchup.
Prediction: Knicks win the series in six games.
