World Cup 2026 Player of the Day - Day 4: Beach Rises to the Occasion as Australia Stun Turkey

Goalkeeper Patrick Beach produced a heroic performance as Australia upset Turkey to begin their 2026 World Cup campaign with a 2-0 win in Vancouver.
A surprise selection between the sticks ahead of captain Mathew Ryan and the experienced Paul Izzo, 22-year-old Beach was making just his third senior appearance for Australia – having only debuted in a friendly against Venezuela last November – but the Melbourne City shot-stopper more than repaid head coach Tony Popovic’s faith in him.
Beach made eight saves to help Australia weather the Turkish storm – Turkey had 30 shots to the Socceroos’ nine – finishing with a goals prevented tally of 1.46 (goals prevented is calculated by deducting the number of goals conceded from the post-shot expected goals (xG) a goalkeeper faces).

Arguably the Sydney-born ‘keeper’s most impressive save came with the score at 1-0 as he dived at full stretch to tip Abdulkerim Bardakci’s ferocious long-range effort onto the post.
Speaking after the memorable victory – secured by goals from Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe – Beach, who only found out two days before the game that he would be starting – told reporters: “It was amazing…a dream come true.
“This is all you think about as a kid. This is the pinnacle: to play for your country on the world stage. And to get a result in the first game and against a really good opposition, it’s just one of the best nights.”
Beach will be hoping to a play a similarly pivotal part in Australia’s next Group D game against co-hosts the USA in San Francisco on Saturday (June 20).
