Díaz through ball sets Saibari free as Scotland fail to land a shot on target

Seventy seconds had elapsed when Brahim Díaz collected possession in the right half-space and spotted Ismael Saibari peeling away from Grant Hanley. The through ball split the Scotland defence, Saibari controlled on the right side of the box, and his right-footed finish flew across Angus Gunn into the left corner. From that moment, Steve Clarke's side spent the remaining 94 minutes searching for a response that never arrived.

Scotland finished the match without registering a single shot on target. Morocco moved to four points and top of Group C, their unbeaten run now stretching to 31 matches. Scotland remain on three points after their opening win over Haiti, with qualification still dependent on the final round of fixtures.

Line-Ups and Subs

Steve Clarke fielded a 5-4-1 formation with Nathan Patterson at right-back, Ryan Christie in midfield, and Kieran Tierney added as a third centre-back alongside Grant Hanley and Jack Hendry. Andrew Robertson operated as left wing-back with Ché Adams alone up front.

Mohamed Ouahbi retained the same eleven that drew with Brazil. Morocco waited until 84 minutes for their first changes, withdrawing Saibari, Díaz, and El Khannouss for Rahimi, Amaimouni-Echghouyab, and Talbi. Scotland made five substitutions: Gannon-Doak for the injured Tierney (60'), Dykes and McLean for Adams and Christie (71'), then Ralston and Stewart for Patterson and McGinn (89').

First Half: Morocco's early strike and Scotland's search for a response

Morocco needed 70 seconds to establish control. Díaz's pass split the defence and Saibari finished into the left corner to give Scotland an immediate deficit. The early goal allowed Morocco to dictate possession, with Achraf Hakimi and Díaz combining down the right flank while Scotland sat deep.

Ayyoub Bouaddi's shot was blocked at 20 minutes. Neil El Aynaoui fired over from inside the area at 30 minutes after Díaz had laid the ball back. Bilal El Khannouss arrived unmarked on the left side of the box at 36 minutes but mishit his right-footed effort, the ball catching his shin and sailing over. Issa Diop was booked for a foul on Adams at 23 minutes.

Scotland's first shot came in stoppage time. Robertson crossed from the left and McGinn met the ball at the far post, but his volley was poorly struck and drifted wide. Tierney had a shot blocked by Ounahi moments later. Morocco held 62 percent possession at the interval.

Second Half: Gunn's save and Riad's blocks deny both sides

Morocco threatened to double their lead within minutes of the restart. Saibari's right-footed shot was deflected by Jack Hendry and grazed the top of the post before going behind. At 52 minutes, Hakimi delivered a corner and El Khannouss directed a header toward goal. Gunn produced a brilliant save, stretching to his right to keep Scotland in the contest.

Tierney signalled for medical attention at 60 minutes, sitting down with apparent groin discomfort. He could not continue and Gannon-Doak replaced him. Hakimi curled wide at 62 minutes. Christie fired over at 64 minutes after a Morocco turnover. Robertson was booked for a foul on Hakimi at 65 minutes.

Clarke introduced Dykes and McLean at 71 minutes. McTominay drove into the area at 85 minutes but Riad blocked his shot. Dykes headed wide from the resulting corner. McTominay tried again at 88 minutes and Riad blocked a second time. Morocco's substitutes Talbi and Amaimouni-Echghouyab both shot wide in stoppage time.

Tactical Notes

Morocco's attacking threat concentrated down the right flank through Díaz and Hakimi. Scotland's 5-4-1 formation sat deep after conceding early but struggled to progress the ball into threatening positions. Tierney's injury at 60 minutes prompted a shift away from the three-centre-back structure. Ouahbi's triple change at 84 minutes managed the closing stages with the scoreline secure.

Broader Implications

Morocco moved to four points and top of Group C, extending their unbeaten run to 31 matches. Scotland's first World Cup defeat since opening this campaign leaves their knockout qualification dependent on other results. Both sides have one group fixture remaining.
