Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham celebrate a goal for England against Mexico at the 2026 World Cup

The race to win the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot is providing a fascinating subplot to the main event itself, with Lionel Messi (favourite), Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland and Harry Kane locked in a four-way tussle to top the tournament’s charts.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is currently running at an average of 2.92 goals per game, putting it on course to be the highest-scoring edition (in terms of avg goal p/g) since Mexico 1970, and the quartet of superstars chasing the Golden Boot are pushing those numbers up.

At the time of writing, Messi, Mbappe, Haaland and Kane have combined to score 10% (28) of the 280 goals plundered at the World Cup this summer between them, and all four players are still involved as the competition inches towards the Quarter-Finals.

World Cup top scorer markets at LiveScoreBet are drawing plenty of attention and below, we analyse the current prices and the contenders’ chances of winning, while we’ve also included some of our own Golden Boot betting tips.

World Cup Golden Boot contenders

Lionel Messi – 11/10 (favourite)

Messi’s sweetly struck equaliser against Egypt in the Round of 16 moved the 39-year-old out on his own as the World Cup’s leading scorer with eight goals, though he might have moved the needle even more had he successfully converted his first-half penalty.

Incredibly, Messi has been averaging a goal every 51.3 minutes for Argentina this summer and alongside being the World Cup’s current leading marksman, the veteran is also the metric leader for average shots registered per game (5.80).

Alongside netting a hattrick against Algeria, twice against Austria and once off the bench against Jordan in the Group Stage, Messi also notched against Cape Verde in the Round of 32 before his effort against Egypt in the Round of 16.

Now the World Cup’s all-time leading goalscorer with 21 goals, Messi will be determined to secure a career first by winning the Golden Boot this year.

Argentina will be looking to their talisman for inspiration when they face Switzerland in the quarter-finals in Kansas City and a victory there could set up a Golden Boot head-to-head between Messi and Harry Kane in the semis.

Messi has had more shots (39) than any other player at the World Cup this summer, while he is also Argentina’s go-to guy for all dangerously-positioned free kicks and penalties, despite missing his last two efforts from the spot.

At slightly better than evens, Messi has appeal in the World Cup top scorer market as Argentina bid to successfully retain their crown, though there might be better value on offer elsewhere.

Kylian Mbappe – 7/5

Most World Cup predictions made pre-tournament this year backed France to win the competition outright and powered by Kylian Mbappe’s brilliance, Les Bleus still look well positioned to deliver.

Mbappe has scored seven times in five starts for the French so far this summer, a tally that puts him just one shy of Messi at the summit of the scorer’s charts and one below the goals total that secured him the Golden Boot at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The 27-year-old has scored twice in three separate outings (vs Senegal, Iraq & Sweden), with his seventh goal (from the penalty spot) the difference between France and Paraguay in a cagey Round of 16 tie in Philadelphia.

Mbappe is chasing Messi in a couple of different races. Alongside competing against the Argentine in the Golden Boot stakes, Mbappe is also just two goals behind Messi in the all-time World Cup top scorers reckoning.

Next up for Mbappe is Morocco, an opponent he failed to score against when France beat the Atlas Lions in the World Cup semi-finals four years ago in Qatar. A semi-final test against Spain in Arlington could follow, and Mbappe did score against La Roja in last year’s Nations League semis.

Backed by a more formidable sporting cast with France, Mbappe’s chance of surpassing Messi in both lanes looks decent, especially if Argentina’s luck runs out. The defending champs edged past Cape Verde and Egypt by the skin of their teeth and in controversial fashion, and their elimination could clear Mbappe’s path to Golden Boot glory.

Back Kylian Mbappe to finish as the World Cup’s top scorer at 7/5

Erling Haaland – 7/1

Now we get into the bigger prices. Despite knocking out Brazil, Norway don’t feature all that readily in the latest 2026 World Cup outright winner markets, but with Erling Haaland firing, they have the potential to upset the odds against any opponent.

Haaland is quite often a peripheral figure in games, though he needs just a split second or half an inch to do damage. Indeed, he touched the ball just 30 times against Brazil in the Round of 16, but still managed to score twice to help Norway row into the next round.

The 25-year-old has scored his seven goals in just 360 minutes of action for his country at this summer’s World Cup, having been rested completely for Norway’s final dead-rubber group game against France.

That means that Haaland might be fresher and have more in the tank than Golden Boot rivals, Messi, Mbappe and Kane, all of whom have more minutes under their belts than the Man City striker.

Norway’s quarter-final test against England pits Haaland against Harry Kane in a fascinating face-off between two prime Golden Boot contenders. The Three Lions are odds-on favourites to win that tie, which means bettors should probably think twice before backing Haaland in the top scorer markets.

Harry Kane – 8/1

England’s pulsating win over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium in the Round of 16 felt like a watershed moment for Thomas Tuchel’s side, and unsurprisingly, skipper Harry Kane was at the heart of their triumph, chipping in with a goal and an assist in a 3-2 victory over the co-hosts.

Kane’s goal, which was dispatched with venom from the spot, was his sixth goal of the tournament, a haul that allows him to lurk with intent and within striking distance of current top scorer Lionel Messi (8).

The Bayern Munich forward has now scored three times and assisted once in two knockout round runouts for England this summer, highlighting Kane’s ability to provide key match-changing moments in fixtures of magnitude. His nose for the big occasion makes him a prospect with real potential in the World Cup Golden Boot market, especially at the prices quoted.

The 32-year-old has had just 10 shots on target spread across five appearances for England at the 2026 World Cup so far, which shows that Kane doesn’t need a ton of openings to make a difference.

If Kane can fire England past Norway in the quarter-finals, he will close in on Messi and eliminate one of his direct rivals for the Golden Boot, while an encounter with Argentina in the semis opens up similar possibilities. Kane’s current 8/1 price in the top scorer markets could be slashed in just a few days’ time, which only adds to his appeal.
