Reigning European champions and 2010 World Cup winners Spain get their latest campaign started on Monday when they face off against Cape Verde at 5pm BST in Atlanta.

The second game in Group H sees Saudi Arabia and Uruguay do battle at 11pm BST in Miami with both sides looking to take a first big stride to a top-two finish.

Spain are the clear favourites to win Group H and will look to get off to the best start possible by beating 67th-ranked Cape Verde.

Best Bets:

Spain to win and over 3.5 goals @ 22/25

Uruguay to win to nil @ 27/25

Spain vs Cape Verde (Monday, 5pm)

After winning the European Championship in 2024, Spain will be desperate to double down on that success and win their second World Cup this summer.

Beating the Netherlands 1-0 in the final back in 2010 for their first title, Luis de la Fuente’s side breezed through their qualification campaign, winning five of their six matches while drawing the other.

Across that time, La Roja netted 21 goals in total and it is that attacking firepower that they will hope can send them to victory in their tournament opener against Cape Verde.

Mikel Oyarzabal remains the man in form for them, netting 12 goals in his last 12 appearances and he will need to continue his fine run as star man Lamine Yamal could miss out on a starting spot as he continues his recovery from injury.

Cape Verde make their World Cup bow in this fixture, becoming the 14th different African nation to take part in the competition.

If they are to become the first side from the continent to reach the knockout stages on debut since Ghana in 2006, they will need to limit the damage in a match in which they are largely expected to be second best.

Despite that, they do still possess strong pedigree across their prior major tournament appearances, advancing to the knockout stages in three of their four Africa Cup of Nations campaigns, with their best runs coming in 2013 and 2023 when they reached the quarter-finals.

The Blue Sharks will be hoping to catch Spain off-guard in this encounter to perhaps avoid a hammering, let alone produce one of the World Cup’s biggest ever upsets with a win.

Score prediction: Spain 4-0 Cape Verde

Saudi Arabia vs Uruguay (Monday, 11pm)

Advancing beyond the group stages in just one of their prior six World Cup campaigns, Saudi Arabia will be hoping to make it out of Group H at this tournament and continue their growth as a footballing nation.

At the last tournament in 2022 they shocked Argentina to claim their most impressive and important victory to date, and they open up against another South American heavyweight in the form of Uruguay.

Producing a similar result may prove beyond them though as they enter this tournament on the back of some wayward form in 2026, winning just one of their last six internationals and even that success came against a side ranked outside of the top 150.

Playing a much tougher opponent like Uruguay is cause for concern, although Marcelo Bielsa’s side hardly arrive in North America in the best of form themselves.

A 0-0 draw with Algeria in their last outing saw them produce just one shot on target, with their overall performance drawing plenty of criticism from supporters and pundits alike back home.

They’ve also struggled in general of late to find the back of the net on a regular basis, now netting just two goals across their last four internationals, a run which also included a humiliating 5-1 friendly defeat to USA.

La Celeste should prove to have too much quality for Saudi Arabia in this fixture still though, with star man Federico Valverde likely to play a big part in any success that they find both in this match, and going forward.

Score prediction: Saudi Arabia 0-1 Uruguay
