Julian Nagelsmann's Germany cruised to an opening 7-1 win but should find things tougher against Ivory Coast
  • Germany are on a run of 10 straight victories after defeating Curacao

  • Ivory Coast are aiming to reach the World Cup knockouts at the fourth attempt

  • Curacao have scored in four straight games, last drawing a blank against China

Germany ran riot in their opening Group E match against Curacao, hitting seven to make a statement with their first win of the 2026 World Cup.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side now face Ivory Coast who scored a 90th-minute winner to edge Ecuador 1-0. The South Americans will hope to bounce back from that opening disappointment when they take on the Blue Wave in Kansas City.

Here we assess the second round of Group E games and pick out the best bets.

Best Bets

Germany vs Ivory Coast (Saturday, 9pm)

Germany beat Curacao with great ease and will be confident of making it 11 wins from 11 games when they face the Ivory Coast in Toronto on Saturday.

While Die Mannschaft did concede a shock first-half equaliser against the Blue Wave, they did not really have to get out of first gear to earn the three points.

Although Germany are heavy favourites to make it two wins from two in Group E, the Elephants will prove a much tougher challenge.

Emerse Fae’s side have won six of their last seven games after Amad Diallo scored a 90th-minute winner against Ecuador, who boast one of the meanest defences.

Ivory Coast are aiming to reach the World Cup knockout stages for the first time at their fourth tournament, and have found the net in each of their last 10 games.

Germany have managed to keep just one clean sheet in five matches and so backing the Europeans to win but with both teams scoring looks the way to go.

Score prediction: Germany 3-1 Ivory Coast

Ecuador vs Curacao (Sunday, 1am)

Curacao’s first-ever World Cup match was marked by scoring against Germany as Livano Comenencia found the net to level matters in the 21st minute of their opener. While the end result of 7-1 will have been tough to take, the nation had truly arrived on the global stage.

However, scoring another goals seems less likely against Ecuador, who conceded just five goals in 18 World Cup qualifying matches.

While the Ivory Coast did manage to get the better of the Ecuador backline, Curacao lack the firepower of the Elephants to get the better of the likes of Piero Hincapie and Willian Pacho in the La Tri backline.

Ecuador had scored in five straight matches before their Group E opener against Ivory Coast and should be confident that they can open their World Cup account against Dick Advocaat’s side in Kansas City this weekend.

Curacao conceded five against Australia and four to Scotland in pre-World Cup friendlies so Ecuador will be expected to win comfortably.

A victory is crucial if Sebastián Beccacece’s men are to have a chance of progressing to the knockout stages as they must face Germany in the last group game.

Betting on an Ecuador win to nil against Curacao looks a sound pick.

Score prediction: Ecuador 3-0 Curacao
