  • Liechtenstein have lost their last three competitive games, scoring no goals and conceding 15

  • Wales have faced Liechtenstein on four occasions and won each match without conceding any goals

  • Recommended bet: Wales to win 5-0

Wales are probably fighting a losing battle in their quest to secure automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup, but they are in the hunt for second place in Group J and will be targeting a thumping victory away to Liechtenstein on Saturday to assist their cause.

Craig Bellamy’s side are four points adrift of leaders Belgium and three behind second-placed North Macedonia, who have played one game more.

The North Macedonians finish their campaign with a visit to Cardiff City Stadium next Tuesday but the size of their task will depend on how Wales fare in Vaduz.

Wales are aware that any win would see them draw level on points with North Macedonia, but they would need to prevail by six goals or more to wipe out their goal difference disadvantage and climb into second place.

Should the Welsh win by six or more it would give them a major advantage because they would host North Macedonia knowing that a draw or better would be sufficient to seal a top-two finish.

Prediction

Wales will be aiming for a six-goal margin of victory at the Rheinpark Stadion, but they may have to settle for five against one of the weakest teams in European World Cup qualifying.

Several international teams bear the minnows tag but few of them live up to the moniker as well as Liechtenstein, who have not won a competitive game since a 2-0 Nations League triumph away to San Marino in September 2020.

Liechtenstein have lost all six qualifiers and they experienced a chastening October with losses away to North Macedonia (0-5) and Kazakhstan (0-4).

The Blue-Reds will do their best to limit the damage, but they are in for a tough night against a Welsh side intent on racking up a wide-margin success.
