Napoli have confirmed that Kevin De Bruyne significantly injured his thigh during Saturday’s 3-1 win over Inter.
The defending champions eased to victory over last season’s runners’ up to keep their place at the top of the table.
De Bruyne had put Napoli ahead from the spot in the 33rd minute before Scott McTominay doubled their advantage shortly after the restart.
Hakan Calhanoglu halved the deficit in the 59th minute, only for Frank Anguissa to restore Napoli’s two-goal lead.
However, De Bruyne, who joined following his Manchester City release earlier in the summer, was forced off shortly after taking his penalty.
The 34-year-old clutched his thigh and was helped off the pitch by the club’s medical staff.
The experienced Belgian playmaker was rushed to hospital after his first half withdrawal where scans confirmed a tear.
Napoli confirm De Bruyne injury
“After sustaining an injury in the match against Inter on Saturday, Kevin De Bruyne underwent diagnostic tests at Pineta Grande Hospital, which revealed a high-grade lesion to the biceps femoris muscle in his right thigh,” a statement read on Napoli’s official website.
“The Napoli player has already begun the rehabilitation process.”
The club haven’t put a timeline on his return but he is unlikely to play again this year.
De Bruyne’s absence is a blow for Napoli, who sit top of Serie A, albeit level on 18 points with Roma.
The Belgium international has made eight league appearances for Napoli following his arrival, scoring four times, while he has started all three of the Italian side’s Champions League games to date.
Napoli are back in action on Tuesday night when they face Lecce, and take on Como, Eintracht Frankfurt and Bologna before the November international break.
