Bruno Fernandes: Your POTY

Bruno Fernandes has been named the Premier League Player of the Season and, for once, the argument feels almost too easy to make. Manchester United have had stars, finishers, defenders and moments of momentum, but Fernandes has been the player who turned the whole thing into a season with shape.

The numbers are brutal in their clarity. Fernandes has produced 20 Premier League assists, drawing level with the single-season record held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne, with United still having one match to play. He has also scored eight goals, giving him the kind of attacking influence that stretches far beyond the usual idea of a midfielder. United finished third and secured Champions League qualification, and their captain was at the centre of it all.

There is sometimes a strange debate around Fernandes because his game is risky. He will try passes others do not see, and he will lose the ball because of it. But this season has been the perfect answer to that criticism. When a player creates more than anyone else, opens more big chances than anyone else and still delivers record-level assists, the risk becomes the point. United needed invention, and he gave them invention by the barrel.

His leadership matters too. Fernandes has carried the captaincy with the impatience of someone who understands the size of the club. He demands movement. He demands tempo. He demands standards. At times this season, United’s attack has looked like it was plugged directly into his nervous system.

The award also recognises endurance. Fernandes has not won this through one purple month or one viral highlight. He has built it week by week, pass by pass, dragging United up the table and back into Europe’s elite conversation.

For United fans, this is more than a personal prize. It is proof that their captain has delivered one of the great creative Premier League seasons. Fernandes has been the brain, the spark and, often, the rescue act. POTY was earned. Let’s see how United, and Bruno, will fare with more matches next season, particularly as they return to the Champions League.
