Wayne Rooney has urged Harry Kane to turn down the chance to sign for Barcelona and instead return to the Premier League with Manchester United.
Kane, who moved to Bayern Munich in 2023, has been linked with a summer exit with a switch to the La Liga champions believed to be on the cards.
Barcelona are in the market for another forward following Robert Lewandowski’s departure, the Polish hitman now set for a move to MLS side Chicago Fire.
And while Julian Alvarez is believed to be the Blaugrana’s top attacking target, Kane is another on the club’s radar.
However, Rooney wants the England captain to reject the chance to move to sunny Spain, turn down a new Bayern contract, and instead complete a switch back to England.
Kane was linked with an Old Trafford switch prior to his move to Bayern but United were unable to agree a fee with Tottenham Hotspur for the English goal machine.
And former United forward Rooney believes that Alan Shearer’s Premier League goal record is enough to lure all-time England goalscorer Kane away from Bavaria.
The 32-year-old has scored 213 Premier League goals in his career, and is just 47 away from matching Shearer’s 260-goal haul.
'I'd love him'
And when asked for his opinion on reports linking Kane with a move to Barcelona, Rooney said: “I think everyone would have an interest.
“Listen, if Harry Kane’s not going to stay at Bayern Munich then I’d love him at Manchester United.
“If he’s listening: ‘Harry, you’ve got Alan Shearer’s record there… help get Manchester United back!’
“You think for Harry Kane, he’s won the Bundesliga and let’s say he goes to Barcelona, he wins La Liga… deep down he wants to win the Premier League.
“Imagine he comes to Manchester United and he’s the one to drive that, to get Manchester United back to winning the league.”
Rooney's backing for Kane and Bellingham
Kane is currently with the England squad at the 2026 World Cup, where the Three Lions face DR Congo in the round-of-32 in their bid to win a first piece of international silverware since 1966.
Rooney believes that both Kane and Jude Bellingham, who between them have scored five of England’s six goals in North America, will have a key role to play as Thomas Tuchel looks to mastermind success.
“If we win the tournament then it’s because of them, more so Harry Kane from my point of view,” Rooney said
“I think Jude is one of those players who lifts his team-mates, probably not even knowing he’s doing it, in terms of desire and hunger.
“Harry is the one who you’re relying on with his goals.’
“Jude will have big moments and he’ll win us the game at some point, but Harry’s goals will be the one thing, I think, which if we win the tournament then it will be because of Harry’s goals.
“But there will be one game, it might be a semi-final, where it’s tight and that’s where Jude will go and take the game.”
Should England beat DR Congo, then they’ll face either co-hosts Mexico or South American side Ecuador in the last-16.
