Tottenham Hotspur have entered the race to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali this summer, reports transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

Spurs are expected to strengthen in midfield this year having come close to relegation last season.

The north London side finished 17th for the second successive campaign and wrapped up their top-flight safety with a 1-0 win over Everton on the final day of the campaign.

Tottenham-bound Tonali?

And the capital side are keen to back head coach Roberto De Zerbi in the market, with the Italian looking to bring Tonali to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tonali, who started 31 league games for Newcastle last season, was tentatively linked with a move away from St. James’ Park on the final day of the January transfer window with rivals Arsenal believed to be keeping tabs on the former AC Milan man.

The Gunners remain interested in the 26-year-old, while Manchester City, Chelsea and Real Madrid are also believed to be monitoring the Magpies star.

Spurs have been active in the summer window already, bringing in Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi from Liverpool and Bournemouth, respectively, on free transfers.

De Zerbi’s side remain locked in negotiations with Brighton & Hove Albion over a potential move for centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke, while the Seagulls have seen a number of bids for Spurs man Luka Vuskovic turned down.

Porro's new contract

In addition, right-back Pedro Porro, who was on Real Madrid and City’s radar, put pen to paper on a new contract at the club on Monday.

“Pedro is a very important player for us, who has consistently shown his ability to influence matches in both defensive and attacking situations,” De Zerbi said of Porro’s new deal.

“As well as his technical quality, I also love his mentality. Every day he wants to work, to learn and to improve, and these are the characteristics that help players reach the highest level.

“He understands football in a very intelligent way, and brings energy, intensity and personality to the team.

“This new contract is good news for everyone at the Club. We believe in Pedro, and I am excited to continue working with him and helping him achieve even more in the coming years.”
