Manchester United are dreaming of bringing central midfielder Scott McTominay back to Old Trafford, reports Caught Offside.

McTominay left United for Serie A giants Napoli 18 months’ ago and has gone on to thrive in Italy.

The Scotland international was instrumental as Napoli won the Scudetto in his debut season in Naples, and his form for Antonio Conte’s side saw the midfield star named Serie A Player of the Year.

Napoli are understandably reluctant to lose McTominay at this stage of the season as they push to successfully defend their Serie A crown.

United weighing up move for former midfielder

However, United are weighing up the possibility of bringing the 29-year-old back to Old Trafford, with offers of around £60m expected to bring the Italian giants to the table.

United are thought to regret allowing the academy graduate to depart the club last summer and are keen to re-sign McTominay at some point in 2026.

The Manchester giants would face competition from a number of Premier League rivals were Napoli’s stance on McTominay to soften.

Tottenham were credited with an interest in McTominay when United sold the player last year, and would likely return for the Scottish star should he come back on to the market.

Additionally, Arsenal and Newcastle have also been linked with a move for McTominay in recent months, though the former would likely see the player as a rotation option in midfield.

Napoli end 2025 in third place in Serie A following their 2-0 win over Cremonense over the weekend, though they are just two points behind league leaders Inter in an incredibly tight Scudetto race.

Conte’s side return to domestic action at the weekend for their first game of 2026, when they take on Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday.

United, meanwhile, welcome table footers Wolves to Old Trafford tonight as they look to follow up their 1-0 Boxing Day win over Newcastle with another three points in their bid to secure a top-four finish.
