Manchester United centre-back Lisandro Martinez has been offered to Atletico Madrid, reports Spanish journalist Inaki Villalon De Linos.
United have seven players capable of playing at centre-back in their senior squad. Last season, game time was handed to each, with changes made due to form, injuries and a change in manager midway through the season.
Who Michael Carrick's preferred centre-back pairing is remains to be seen, but with Champions League football at Old Trafford next season, it would seem he'd want ample options.
But per the El Chiringuito journalist, one of his options, Martinez, has been offered to Atletico.
It is not clear whether it is United themselves or the Argentine's intermediaries who have made the offer of his services.
It is not he first time this summer that the Red Devils have been threatened over Martinez's exit, after former boss Ruben Amorim was reported to be interested in taking him to AC Milan.
It is not clear for what price, if any, United would sell their defender.
Atleti want a new defender
It has been evident that Atletico want to sign a new centre-back this summer. They have been one of the main names mentioned in regards to a move for Tottenham's Cristian Romero for months.
However, Fabrizio Romano has named two clubs who are in the mix for Romero, and Atletico were absent in that.
The insider said it was Inter Milan and Barcelona who were keen on Romero, with the Italian club making contact with Spurs surrounding the conditions of a deal.
Should one of the other clubs land Romero, Atleti obviously won't do, and whether they want to sign him at all now is in question.
As a result, the signing of Martinez would make sense, as an experienced player both in a top-five league and with a major national side in Argentina, just like Romero.
It's not clear whether Martinez would be open to a move to Atleti himself, but if it's his entourage who have made the offer, that would suggest he is.
It remains to be seen whether he leaves United this summer, as Carrick would most likely want to keep him if possible.
