When Harry Kane is first choice striker, the chances of regular game time are slim at best. Kane, after all, is one of football’s best frontmen. And he’s proven as such once more for Bayern Munich this season.

The England captain has scored 30 league goals in 2025-26 and laid on an additional five assists. He has Robert Lewandowski’s 41-goal campaign in his sights, even if time is running out to catch the Pole.

Kane, though, can’t play every game, as much as he’d want to. Indeed, he’s started 22 of 26 Bundesliga matches this season, with Nicolas Jackson brought in as his deputy last year. Loan Watch heads to Bavaria this week with the Senegal international falling under the microscope.

Jackson's game time struggles

Jackson has made just seven league starts for Vincent Kompany’s side this season. The on-loan Chelsea man has actually started Bayern’s last three competitive matches, featuring from the outset in wins over Gladbach and Atalanta. The former Villarreal man netted in both.

However, as he sought to really work his way into Kompany’s good books for the run-in, Jackson received his marching orders for a heinous challenge on Martin Terrier in the weekend’s 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen. The striker was slapped with a two-match Bundesliga ban for his troubles.

The red card compounds what’s been an incredibly mixed spell for Jackson under the watchful eye of Kompany. Shortly after moving to Munich, Jackson was effectively told his stay in Germany would be a temporary one. “And there will definitely not be a permanent contract. That only happens if he plays 40 games from the start. He will never do that,” honorary club president Uli Hoeneß revealed back in September.

Modest league and European goal haul

And yet despite his limited game time, Jackson has performed his duties relatively well on the Bayern frontline when called upon. Aside from his red card against Bayer Leverkusen, of course. Of the 17 appearances he has made, only seven have come from the outset. Jackson still has four goals to his name across 577 minutes of action.

Admittedly, that perhaps should have been higher given Bayern’s dominance over the league. Conversely, it’s been tough for Jackson to strike a run of form given the lack of time on the pitch. This in turn has impacted his consistency in the final third.

A Champions League haul of three goals and two assists at the time of writing is a more telling indicator of his showings in a Bayern shirt.

Even playing second fiddle to Kane, Jackson is still willing to chance his luck where possible, as evidenced by a return of three shots per 90 in the Bundesliga. A 21.1% conversion rate isn’t to be scoffed at, nor is 2.2 chances created per 90. Had his teammates sported their shooting boots, then he’d have had at least one assist to his name in Germany’s top tier.

What’s more, he’s offering the directness in the final third that helps to punch a hole in the opposition defence. While Jackson isn’t always successful in his efforts to get the better of a marker, he’s still attempting 2.2 dribbles per 90 in both the Bundesliga and the Champions League.

Diaz's form impacting game time

The issue is that Jackson’s preference is to drift from the left. This wouldn’t be a concern for Bayern had Luis Diaz not enjoyed a fine debut campaign in Germany following his arrival from Liverpool last summer. The Colombian has scored 15 goals and provided 11 assists in the 2025-26 Bundesliga season, and ranks among the top five players for both key passes (56) and successful dribbles (56) in the division.

In short, Diaz’s form is also playing its part in keeping Jackson out of the side.

So, what next for Jackson? The Senegalese forward endured a falling out with former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, meaning there may now be the chance for a return to the Blues setup. That being said, Liam Rosenior is currently Chelsea boss, but even he may not be at the Stamford Bridge helm beyond the end of the season.

Chelsea future?

Competition for spots on the Chelsea frontline is already rife following the additions of both Liam Delap and Joao Pedro from Ipswich and Brighton, respectively, last year. The former may have struggled, but the latter has shone, scoring 14 league goals this season. Only Erling Haaland (22) and compatriot Igor Thiago (19) have bagged more. Young Dutch striker Emmanuel Emegha will also move to west London from Strasbourg at the end of the season.

Chelsea are reportedly in the market for a new striker this summer. Jackson will return to Stamford Bridge with three competitors for, essentially, one spot in attack. And with Joaquin Panichelli and Julian Alvarez rumoured targets, an already busy Chelsea frontline is expected to become even more packed.

Jackson hasn't exactly thrived in Germany, yet he was essentially drafted in as cover for Kane in the final third. He’s unlikely to have a long-term future at Chelsea, much to the dismay of supporters, but he’s proven across his sporadic outings that he is an effective attacking option.

And with ample top-level European experience to boot, Jackson should be a man in demand this summer. Just sort the ill-discipline, Nicolas.
