Chelsea are keeping tabs on Liverpool midfielder Florian Wirtz as the Blues consider replacements for Enzo Fernandez, reports Football Insider.
Fernandez has been heavily linked with a summer switch to La Liga giants Real Madrid, though the Premier League side are looking to recoup most, if not all, of the £106.8m they paid to sign the Argentine from Benfica in 2023.
And the FA Cup runners’ up have been linked with a move for Wirtz should Fernandez secure a summer switch to the Bernabeu.
Incoming Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso is said to be a huge admirer of the Germany international, who established himself as one of the best creative midfielders in the Bundesliga under the eye of the Spaniard.
However, Liverpool would command a hefty fee for the German star, who endured a difficult debut season in England following his £116m arrival from Bayer Leverkusen last summer.
Iraola will want first look at Wirtz
The 23-year-old managed just five goals and three assists in England’s top tier last term and it remains to be seen whether new boss Andoni Iraola will want to retain the youngster’s services.
The Spaniard replaced Arne Slot at the Anfield helm earlier this month and will want to take a closer look at Wirtz before sanctioning a potential sale.
Additionally, Liverpool would look to recoup much of the fee they paid to sign Wirtz last summer despite a sub-par first year in England.
Reds rectifying their wide issues
The Reds recently secured the services of Victor Munoz from Spanish side Osasuna as they gear up to rectify their wide issues.
Newcastle were close to landing the 22-year-old but were pipped to the youngster, who is part of the Spain national team for the 2026 World Cup.
Liverpool are also hoping to sign Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig but were rebuffed with their opening £87m bid.
The German side are expected to demand upwards of £100m for Diomande after a stunning breakout Bundesliga campaign, where he netted 12 and provided eight assists.
