The first UEFA Cup took place in the 1971/72 season – and until the 1996/97 campaign, it was a straight knockout affair culminating in a two-legged final.
A group stage was introduced for 2004/05, with the competition being rebranded as the Europa League in 2009.
Tottenham were the first club to get their hands on the trophy, beating fellow English side Wolves 3-2 on aggregate in the 1972 final. In total, 30 clubs from 11 countries have won the Europa League / UEFA Cup, with Spurs also winning the most recent edition of the competition.

Eleven clubs have won both the Europa League and Champions League. Feyenoord were the first to achieve the feat, lifting the European Cup in 1970 and the UEFA Cup in 1974.
Along with Feyenoord, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Manchester United and Ajax all won the European Cup before the UEFA Cup came into being.
Three clubs have won the European Cup / Champions League for the first time before winning the UEFA Cup / Europa League for the first time: Bayern Munich, PSV Eindhoven and Porto.
Liverpool and Chelsea are the only two clubs to win the UEFA Cup / Europa League for the first time before winning the European Cup / Champions League for the first time.
Two sides have won the UEFA Cup / Europa League then the European Cup / Champions League the very next season: Liverpool (1975/76 and 1976/77) and Porto (2003/03 and 2003/04).
