A tight League One play-off race saw the third-placed finishers Stockport wrap up their spot only in the final game of the season.

They start their postseason campaign with a visit to Stevenage, who dramatically secured a top-six berth with a 92nd-minute winner over Wigan on Saturday. They will be hoping to take advantage of an injury-hit County side to progress.

Team news

Stockport remain decimated by injuries, particularly in defence. Tyler Onyango, Callum Connolly, Joseph Olowu, Brad Hills, Callum Camps and Josh Dacres-Cogley are all either injured or doubtful for this clash.

As a result star striker Kyle Wootton may have to continue to play in central defence, with Ethan Pye the only fit senior central defender.

Stevenage will be without Lewis Freestone and Jordan Houghton for this clash, although Luther Wildin has recovered from his injury and could feature.

The stats

This is a meeting between a team who tend to be involved in low-scoring clashes and a side who have a tendency to be involved in end-to-end affairs. Eight of Stevenage’s last 10 games have gone under 2.5 goals while four of Stockport’s last five have produced three or more.

County have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last five games as their injury issues start to bite while Stevenage have not kept a clean sheet in the last eight head-to-heads.

Prediction

Stevenage and Stockport both recorded dramatic final day victories to secure a play-off spot and the first leg of this play-off encounter is  a fascinating tie.

County were stronger throughout the majority of the season but their defensive injuries means that they have tailed off towards the end of the campaign while Stevenage have finished strong thanks to their impressive defensive record.

Although they have scored 22 goals fewer than Stockport this season, Boro had the second-best defensive record in the third tier behind title winners Lincoln, conceding just 46 goals in as many games.

It is hard to be bullish about either side for win purposes but a fascinating goalscorer contender is Louie Barry.

The Aston Villa loanee is on his third spell with Stockport and has a remarkable goalscoring record for the club, netting 27 times in 45 league games. With star striker Kyle Wootton having to slot in at the back, Barry should lead the line and looks overpriced to net.
