  • QPR are 16th in the Championship table, 11 points clear of the bottom three

  • Portsmouth occupy 20th position, one point above the relegation zone

  • Recommended bet: Portsmouth to win

Portsmouth are embroiled in a Championship relegation battle as they head to Loftus Road on Saturday afternoon to take on QPR, who look safe after last weekend's win at Leicester.

The R's defeated the Foxes 3-1 at the King Power Stadium, increasing the gap to the bottom three to 11 points and it looks likely the club will be playing in the second tier again next season.

It is not so clear-cut for Pompey, who are just a point and two places above the drop zone and they know how precious a victory would be in West London.

Team news

QPR are missing Steve Cook, Nicolas Madsen, Karamoko Dembele, Ilias Chair and Rumarn Burrell due to injury.

There is better news on Justin Obikwu, who is in contention to make the matchday squad for the first time since his January arrival from Coventry.

Portsmouth also have a lengthy injury list to deal with, as they remain without the services of Josh Knight, Ajibola Alese, Andre Dozzell, Mark Kosznovszky, Josh Murphy, Franco Umeh and Thomas Waddingham.

Harvey Blair should return to the squad after missing Monday's loss to Derby because of a groin issue and Conor Shaughnessy could be recalled to the starting XI after coming off the bench against the Rams.

The stats

QPR snapped a four-game losing run with last weekend's win at Leicester, but the R's have lost their last three matches at Loftus Road, against Blackburn, Sheffield United and Middlesbrough.

QPR have conceded 30 goals at home, only Hull (31) and relegated Sheffield Wednesday (41) have worse records.

Portsmouth have won two, drawn one and lost one of their last four away fixtures and won 2-1 on their last trip to QPR in October 2024.

Prediction

With QPR 11 points clear of the bottom three, relegation now looks unlikely and it would be no surprise to see them easing off over the next few weeks as plans for next season are made.

There will be no such slacking for Portsmouth, who are still fighting for their Championship status and need to get back to winning ways following a five-match run without a victory.

Although failing to get positive results, Pompey's performances have not been bad and they were unlucky to lose 1-0 at home to play-off chasing Derby on Monday evening.

But Fratton Park has not been a happy place for Portsmouth and this trip to Loftus Road could perhaps work in their favour, as they have collected seven points from the last 12 on offer away from home.

Pompey have won at Charlton and Millwall during that four-game stretch and they may just have enough to pick up a much-needed victory at QPR.
