Derby moved back into the Championship’s top half after Monday’s dominant 3-0 victory away to Sheffield Wednesday, but they have been less productive on home soil and will be hoping to change the dynamic when taking on struggling Portsmouth at Pride Park Stadium.

John Eustace’s Rams have taken just a point from the last three home fixtures and their last home clean sheet came back in October when they triumphed 1-0 over QPR.

However, the club have moved on from last season’s relegation battle and are much closer to the play-off places (four points adrift) than the drop zone (11 points clear).

Portsmouth were involved in the relegation fight last term, and they could be facing another scrap for second tier survival.

John Mousinho’s men have taken just seven points from their last 10 games, although three of those were secured last weekend with a come-from-behind 2-1 success at home to Blackburn.

Team news

The home side are without on loan Crystal Palace midfielder David Ozoh and forward Carlton Morris, who are missing with thigh and ankle injuries.

Captain Lewis Travis and defender Max Johnston are thought to be closer to returning but the Portsmouth fixture is likely to be too soon.

Pompey defender Regan Poole is in contention after missing the last three games with an ankle problem, while attacker Franco Umeh is building up his fitness levels as he strives to make his first appearance since arriving on loan from Crystal Palace in the summer.

Josh Knight, Conor Shaughnessy, Jacob Farrell, Connor Ogilvie and Thomas Waddingham remain on the sidelines.

The stats

Five of the last six matches between Derby and Portsmouth have finished all square.

Derby have won just three home games, which is the lowest total among teams in the top 17 positions.

Eight of Derby’s last nine fixtures have featured goals for both teams.

Portsmouth have conceded the opening goal in each of their last four matches.

Four of Portsmouth’s last six matches have generated at least three goals.

Portsmouth have failed to win on their last eight road trips.

Prediction

Portsmouth hauled themselves out of the drop zone with last weekend’s gutsy 2-1 win at home to Blackburn and they can follow by taking a point against Derby in the East Midlands.

The south coast side went into the Blackburn fixture having failed to score in three successive games but they delivered a strong second half performance and were worthy winners after winning the shot count 18 to 11.

Mousinho’s side should be feeling a bit more confident and they can compete on even terms with the Rams, who have been inconsistent either side of a five-match winning run put together before the November break.

Derby have registered just three of their eight league wins on home soil and they could be left feeling frustrated this weekend.
