  • Wednesday have lost four of their last eight league games by at least two goals

  • Charlton have won 14 of their last 17 home fixtures

  • Recommended bet: Charlton -1 on 3-way handicap

Sheffield Wednesday’s season has lurched from one crisis to another and there was further bad news this week with a winding up petition served in relation to an unpaid tax bill.

The Owls are in the midst of a battle for their very existence and against the off-field issues their players are trying to compete in an ultra-competitive league.

Understandably results have been poor, with just six points taken from nine games.

Henrik Pedersen's side are second from bottom and face a tough 10th assignment at newly-promoted Charlton, who are adapting well to second tier football.

The Londoners were beaten 2-0 at Preston before the international break, but they are in a healthy mid-table position, just three points outside the play-off places.

Team news

Josh Edwards (ankle) faces a few more weeks on the sidelines but free agent signing Onel Hernandez is fully fit and pushing for his first minutes of the campaign for Charlton. Amari'i Bell, Tyreece Campbell and Karoy Anderson need to be assessed after returning from international duty with Jamaica.

For the Owls, first-choice goalkeeper Pierce Charles (shoulder) hasn’t featured since August and Nathaniel Chalobah (hamstring) will need to be assessed as he edges closer to a return.

The stats

Five of Charlton’[s last six wins have been accompanied by clean sheets.

The Addicks have scored in six of their last seven matches.

Charlton have started the scoring in four of their last five fixtures

Sheffield Wednesday have won just one of their last 14 matches.

The Owls have conceded at least two goals in seven of nine Championship games.

Prediction

Charlton have been making a decent fist of second tier football and they can climb into the top half by defeating beleaguered Sheffield Wednesday at the Valley.

The Addicks were a League One club for five successive seasons between 2020 and 2025, but they don’t look out of place in the Championship and have delighted their fans by taking seven points from four home fixtures.

Nathan Jones’s side have lost just one of their last five fixtures and their physical, direct brand of football is sure to ask questions of an out-of-sorts Wednesday team struggling to stay in the fight at the lower end of the table.

Wednesday are playing with plenty of spirit but their lack of quality was exposed a fortnight ago as they slumped to a 5-0 loss at home to Coventry.

There could be a few more heavy defeats in the pipeline, starting with setback in the capital this weekend.
