  • Bristol City appointed 78-year-old Roy Hodgson as caretaker manager last week

  • Charlton have picked up seven points from their last four fixtures

  • Recommended bet: Charlton to win 1-0

Bristol City surprisingly appointed the vastly experienced Roy Hodgson as caretaker manager last week with the former England and Crystal Palace boss replacing the sacked Gerhard Struber at Ashton Gate.

Struber was shown the door following a winless six-game run and now 78-year-old Hodgson will hope to steady the ship.

Charlton eased their relegation worries thanks to wins over Birmingham and Middlesbrough last month but they were edged out 1-0 by Norwich City in their most recent game.

Team News

Charlton must continue to manage without imposing central defender Reece Burke, who is currently struggling with a muscle strain.

After recently undergoing a second session of surgery on his knee, Matt Godden is edging closer to a return. The experienced striker was Charlton’s top-scorer last season, but has been restricted to just six appearances this term.

Meanwhile, versatile attacker Harvey Knibbs and Scottish full-back Josh Edwards are recovering from serious ankle issues.

Hodgson has inherited an injury-stricken Bristol City backline, with no less than four first-team defenders navigating long-term absences.

George Tanner and Rob Atkinson have both suffered ligament damage in recent weeks, while Luke McNally has been sidelined for over a year due to rupturing his ACL.

Rob Dickie is also set to miss the run-in, after developing a hamstring complaint towards the end of Struber’s short tenure.

The stats

Neither side has scored more than one goal in any of Charlton’s last seven Championship games.

The South Londoners registered 1-0 victories over mid-table Birmingham and promotion-chasing Middlesbrough last month.

Bristol City lost four of their five matches heading into the international break, prompting the return of Hodgson to the dugout following a two-year absence from management.

Although they conceded for the 50th time this season in the recent 1-0 home loss to West Brom, the Robins have managed to keep a respectable 11 clean sheets.

Prediction

Although Charlton and Bristol City are unlikely to be sucked into the relegation scrap, both teams will be looking nervously over their shoulder in the Championship.

The stats suggest that a Charlton victory is the most likely outcome, albeit a slender one.

Friday’s hosts have won eight of their 19 league fixtures at the Valley this term, but are averaging less than one goal per game on home soil. In fact, only already-relegated Sheffield Wednesday have netted on fewer occasions overall.

That said, the Addicks’ defensive record is superior to the vast majority of clubs positioned in the lower half of the table.

Bristol City have actually accumulated more points on the road than at Ashton Gate, but tend to lose their attacking edge in away contests with the Robins netting just 21 goals on the road.

This could easily develop into a tight encounter with limited goalscoring opportunities, but expect the hosts to find a way to win.
