Chelsea head to Italy to take on Atalanta on Tuesday night in Champions League Matchday 6 with the aim of taking a step closer to reaching the knockout stages of the competition.

The Blues have failed to win for three games in the Premier League, but beat Barcelona 3-0 at Stamford Bridge in their last European outing.

The hosts, meanwhile, are unbeaten in four Champions League matches and beat Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany in their most recent encounter on the continent.

Team news

Atalanta will be without winger Kamaldeen Sulemana, who is unavailable due to a muscle problem, while left wing-back Mitchel Bakker has been sidelined until March with a cruciate ligament injury.

Chelsea have missed Moises Caicedo due to suspension in the Premier League, but the midfielder should return to the starting line-up in Europe.

Liam Delap is set for another spell on the sidelines after injuring his shoulder against Bournemouth on Saturday, while Levi Colwill, Romeo Lavia and Dario Essugo are all unavailable.

The stats

Atalanta and Chelsea meet in European competition for the first time on Tuesday night.

This is Chelsea's first away game in Italy since beating AC Milan at the San Siro in October 2022.

Prior to that, the Blues had only won one of their games away to Italian sides in the competition, drawing three and losing six.

Atalanta have won only one of their seven matches against English teams in the Champions League, drawing three and losing three.

Chelsea have failed to win in their last four Champions League away games. The Blues went five away matches without victory in the Champions League back in February 2012.

Atalanta have kept eight clean sheets in the Champions League since the start of last season. That is a shutout in more than half of their 15 games.

Prediction

Atalanta are experiencing rare struggles having finished third or fourth in six of the last nine Serie A campaigns.

Seemingly finding it hard to adjust to life without legendary manager Gian Piero Gasperini, the team currently sit 12th in the table having sacked Ivan Juric in November.

New boss Raffaele Palladino saw a response with three straight wins before La Dea were humbled 3-1 by second-bottom Verona on Saturday.

However, while Serie A has proved difficult, Atalanta have impressed in Europe with three wins in their last four Champions League matches.

Beating Marseille and Eintracht Frankfurt away from without conceding a goal, the Italians will be confident of giving Chelsea a game on Tuesday.

The Blues had lost just one game in October and November and have 10 points from five games in the Champions League.

As both teams look to find their feet again and build a consistent run of positive results, it may be that they cancel each other out at the New Balance Arena and have to settle for a point apiece.
