Following Xabi Alonso's arrival at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea are eager to improve the goalkeeper position with the signing of Sunderland's Robin Roefs, reports The Sun.
The Blues' season has fallen off a cliff, from top-four contention to 10th with two games to go. Liam Rosenior didn't last long after replacing Enzo Maresca, and former Real Madrid manager Alonso is the man taking his place.
The high standards he's set through his managerial career will be evident with Chelsea, and it seems goalkeeper Robert Sanchez is in danger of not cutting it for his compatriot.
The Sun reports the Blues have 'question marks' over the current No.1, and they now want to sign Sunderland stopper Roefs.
The Dutchman has been an integral part of the Black Cats' season, keeping 10 clean sheets for the ninth-placed Premier League side, and is now said to be valued at around £50million.
Filip Jorgensen has also struggled to convince Chelsea that he should be the No.1, so Roefs could walk straight in and be the unequivocal choice between the sticks.
Liverpool want Roefs
There is competitions between Chelsea and Liverpool for Roefs, though. The Reds, too, have questions to answer in net, with Alisson a target for a number of Italian clubs, including Juventus.
They are making a strong push for the Brazilian, who it's believed would be open to making the switch there from Anfield.
Liverpool do have Giorgi Mamardashvili in their squad, who most would assume would be the natural successor for Alisson if he's to leave, particularly as he's started 10 Premier League games in his absence this season.
But he's struggled to convince, with the Georgian conceding five goals in his last two games.
Neither Chelsea nor Liverpool are said to be put off by Roefs' price tag of around £50million, and there could be a battle on for his services.
It would be a huge coup for the Blues to win the race for two reasons. Firstly, they'd be landing one of the premier goalkeepers in English football this season, but also it would see Alonso land a star man ahead of his former club.
Roefs is reported to be Liverpool's number one target this summer, so Chelsea could pull off a heist for the stopper.
