Tottenham Target Maxi Araujo Transfer as Left-Back Crisis Deepens During Relegation Fight

Tottenham are weighing up a summer move for Sporting CP and Uruguay left-back Maxi Araujo, according to Sport Witness.
The left side of defence has been something of a problem position for Spurs this season with first choice Destiny Udogie restricted to just 10 league starts due to injury this campaign.
The Italy international is currently missing due to a muscle problem, while deputy Ben Davies is also absent having suffered a broken ankle in the 2-1 defeat to West Ham at the start of the year.
Their respective absences leaves just Brazilian youngster Souza as the only available left-back to head coach Roberto De Zerbi.
Araujo also linked with Arenal switch
Spurs, though, are looking to rectify their left-back concerns with a move for Araujo this summer as they seek to bolster at the back.
The 26-year-old, who can also play on the left wing, has been a key player for the Portuguese powerhouse this season.
Araujo has scored four goals and laid on an additional three assists in Liga Portugal and recently caught the eye with a standout display in Sporting’s 1-0 loss to Arsenal in the Champions League.
The Gunners have also been credited with an interest in Araujo, while Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City are also keeping tabs on the Uruguayan.
Move for Araujo relies on Spurs staving off relegation
However, any move for Araujo is dependent on Spurs retaining their Premier League status.
The north London side are currently mired in a relegation scrap and sit two points off safety with four games of the season to go.
Spurs at least claimed a first league win of 2026 last time out with Joao Palhinha’s second half strike enough to secure all the spoils in a 1-0 win at table footers Wolves.
And next up for De Zerbi’s side is Sunday’s trip to Villa Park, where they face Aston Villa.
Spurs then see out the season with games against Leeds, Chelsea and Everton as they strive to avoid dropping into the Championship.
