Heidenheim could become the first team to be relegated this season if they lose at home to St. Pauli on Saturday.
RB Leipzig have won six of their last seven league matches ahead of their tussle with Marie-Louise Eta’s Union Berlin on Friday evening.
Wolfsburg are aiming to win back-to-back games in the Bundesliga for only the second time this season when they host Borussia Monchengladbach.
Bayern Munich have already been confirmed as champions, however, there is still plenty to play for elsewhere in the Bundesliga as game week 31 of the 2025/26 season approaches.
As usual, this week’s action kicks off with a Friday-night fixture, this time from Leipzig, where Ole Werner’s red-hot Roten Bullen take on Union Berlin at the Red Bull Arena.
On Saturday, a further six games follow, with Heidenheim’s relegation six-pointers between Heidenheim and St. Pauli, and Wolfsburg vs Gladbach, catching the eye there.
A day later, there is a double dose of German football to look forward to, anchored by Borussia Dortmund’s clash with Freiburg at Signal Iduna Park.
We’ve got full coverage of all nine matches from week 31 of the Bundesliga campaign below, with predictions for each contest included.
RB Leipzig vs Union Berlin (Friday, 7:30 pm)
As we predicted, RB Leipzig had too much firepower for Eintracht Frankfurt last weekend, when they racked up a hugely impressive 19 attempts in their 3-1 triumph over Die Adler. Ole Werner’s slick Roten Bullen have now claimed wins in six of their last seven Bundesliga assignments and are zeroing in on a top-four finish and Champions League qualification.
Union Berlin meanwhile, lost their first game under the historic stewardship of Marie-Louise Eta, though they were unfortunate in the extreme, having manufactured 25 shots to Wolfsburg’s five in a 2-1 loss. That was the most chances the Iron Ones have created in a single sitting since the start of the campaign, and though they are unlikely to claim a shock result at Leipzig, their new attacking mindset under Eta could make for an entertaining tussle.
Score prediction: RB Leipzig 3-2 Union Berlin
Augsburg vs Eintracht Frankfurt (Saturday, 2:30 pm)
A brace from Fabian Rieder, including a 96th-minute penalty, allowed Augsburg to secure a coupon-busting victory at highflying Bayer Leverkusen last time, pushing their unbeaten streak to three games in the process. Finn Dahmen (9 saves) was inspirational between the sticks against Die Werkself, though Augsburg’s keeper might not be quite as busy on Saturday.
Visiting Eintracht Frankfurt were humbled at home by RB Leipzig (1-3) in their last test, in a loss that again highlighted Die Adler’s habit of dropping their intensity levels in the second half of games. Frankfurt have failed to win on three of their last four visits to face Augsburg, and with Head Coach Albert Riera still struggling to get a proper tune out of his players, more points could be dropped here.
Score prediction: Augsburg 1-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
FC Koln vs Bayer Leverkusen (Saturday, 2:30 pm)
Koln can’t seem to shake their drawing habit and last weekend’s 1-1 draw with St. Pauli was their fourth stalemate in their last five assignments in the Bundesliga. Still, an unbeaten streak, which now stands at five games, has given them some breathing room in the battle for survival, with Koln sitting five points clear of the relegation playoff position.
It’s been a tough week for Bayer Leverkusen, who are licking their wounds following successive defeats to Augsburg in the league and Bayern Munich in the DFB Pokal, with the latter ending any hopes of finishing the campaign with silverware. Die Werkself could rebound on Saturday, however. Leverkusen have won on three of their last four visits to play Koln and they seem to enjoy performing at the RheinEnergieStadion.
Score prediction: FC Koln 1-2 Bayer Leverkusen
Heidenheim vs St. Pauli (Saturday, 2:30 pm)
Bottom club Heidenheim could become the first confirmed relegated side in the Bundesliga this season if they lose to St. Pauli on Saturday, however, the hosts have been dogged enough of late to suggest they can postpone the drop for another week. Heidenheim lost narrowly at Freiburg (1-2) a week ago, but managed to avoid defeat in three of their last four home matches.
Relegation rivals St. Pauli meanwhile, have gone six games in the division without a win and have failed to triumph in 13 out of 15 away Bundesliga fixtures since the start of the season. Heidenheim seem determined to go down swinging. They hit 11 goals in their last four home games combined and they might be able to outgun St. Pauli in this one.
Score prediction: Heidenheim 2-1 St. Pauli
Mainz vs Bayern Munich (Saturday, 2:30 pm)
Mainz recovered from their dismal 4-0 Conference League semi-final second-leg loss to Strasbourg in typically defiant style on Sunday evening. They trailed for almost 90 minutes at Gladbach on Sunday, but won and converted a penalty seven minutes into injury time to earn a share of the spoils. This dogged Mainz side actually held Bayern to a 2-2 draw in Munich in December, and they could be awkward customers for the champions again here.
Vincent Kompany’s title winners sealed the deal with a 4-2 triumph over Stuttgart a week ago, and followed up with a 2-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB Pokal semi-final in midweek. Just a few days after they tackle Mainz, Bayern play PSG in the Champions League, so expect Kompany to rest players at the MEWA Arena. With Bayern likely to field a shuffled XI, this contest could be a close-run thing.
Score prediction: Mainz 1-2 Bayern Munich
Wolfsburg vs Borussia Monchengladbach (Saturday, 2:30 pm)
Wolfsburg rekindled their flickering survival hopes with a 2-1 win at Union Berlin last weekend, though that victory was the very definition of smash and grab, after Die Wolfe clocked just five shots to their host’s 25. That was Wolfsburg’s first win in the Bundesliga in 13 attempts since January 14th. They’ve won only six times in total this term, though one of those rare results was secured against Gladbach in December (3-1).
Buoyed by their unexpected win in the capital, Dieter Hecking’s side should have renewed confidence to harness on Saturday. Visiting Gladbach have lost six and drawn three of their last nine away games in Germany’s top tier, while they’ve also lost each of their last three meetings with Wolfsburg. We recommend siding with Die Wolfe again in this one.
Score prediction: Wolfsburg 2-1 Borussia Monchengladbach
Hamburg vs Hoffenheim (Saturday, 5:30 pm)
Relegation fears have been heightened at Hamburg following last weekend’s 3-1 reverse to fellow strugglers Werder Bremen. That was the club’s third loss in four matches during a sequence where their goal difference took a hammering (11 goals conceded). Hamburg, who have failed to win seven of their last eight home games, could be vulnerable again on Saturday evening.
Hoffenheim have been wobbling of late, though their 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund last time out, which featured a 97th-minute penalty kick winner from Andrej Kramaric got their top-four challenge back on track. Hoffenheim were far too good for Hamburg in December’s reverse fixture (4-1) and lifted by their late show against Dortmund, they can prove their class again in Saturday’s rematch.
Score prediction: Hamburg 1-3 Hoffenheim
VfB Stuttgart vs Werder Bremen (Sunday, 2:30 pm)
Stuttgart scored early but were unable to fully dampen Bayern Munich’s coronation day last weekend, eventually succumbing to a 4-2 loss at the Allianz Arena. With margins slim, Sebastian Hoeneß’s side cannot afford many more slipups in the race for a top-four berth, so expect Stuttgart to be fully focused for Sunday’s clash with Werder Bremen.
Stuttgart tend to be ruthless when hosting the teams loitering near the foot of the table. They beat Koln 3-1 on February 14th, Wolfsburg 4-0 on March 1st and Hamburg 4-0 on April 12th, so they should be in command again when facing Bremen (15th). Indeed, Stuttgart put four goals without reply past Die Werderaner while registering 24 shots in December and they could in for an equally comfortable outing on Sunday.
Score prediction: VfB Stuttgart 3-0 Werder Bremen
Borussia Dortmund vs Freiburg (Sunday, 4:30 pm)
Borussia Dortmund are virtually assured of a top-four finish this term, though that seems to have taken the edge off their performances. They lost back-to-back Bundesliga fixtures for the first time this season in their successive defeats to Bayer Leverkusen (1-0) and Hoffenheim (1-2), however, they have an opportunity to redress the balance when they host a busy Freiburg side on Sunday.
Freiburg were in action in the DFB Pokal semifinals on Thursday evening and have been juggling responsibilities on three fronts, with their involvement in the latter stages of the Europa League making for some relentless scheduling. As a result, they’ve dropped points in 50% of their last ten matches in the league. In addition, they’ve lost heavily on each of their last five visits to Dortmund (4-0, 5-1, 5-1, 3-0 & 4-0), so back Dortmund to collect three points.
Score prediction: Borussia Dortmund 3-0 Freiburg
