Luis Diaz and Johan Manzambi both shone on day eight of the 2026 World Cup. The pair were directly involved in two goals during respective wins over Uzbekistan and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Late in the day, however, co-hosts Canada put on a show as they claimed the biggest victory of the tournament so far. The Canucks were unfortunate not to claim all the spoils against Bosnia and Herzegovina on matchday one. They ensured history didn’t repeat itself on Thursday.

Qatar rode their luck in their 1-1 draw with Switzerland over the weekend. Julen Lopetegui’s side were not afforded the same luxury against Canada. And it was star forward Jonathan David who ensured a first ever World Cup win.

David followed in Lionel Messi’s footsteps and bagged a hat-trick against Qatar, rounding off a 6-0 win in second-half injury time to all-but secure Canada’s round-of-32 spot. The 26-year-old did so with three of eight efforts he managed across 90 minutes in Vancouver.

Incidentally wearing the number 10 shirt, David’s was a 10-out-of-10 showing for Jesse Marsch’s men as Canada comfortably downed nine-man Qatar. For a player who endured a disappointing domestic campaign with Juventus - David scored just six league goals last season - this was a return to form for the Canadian striker.

Canada can take their foot off the gas slightly when they take on Switzerland to round off the Group B action, safe in the knowledge their spot in the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup is effectively wrapped up. However, with David purring into life as the tournament really gets into the swing of things, he’ll want to maintain that fine goalscoring form to ensure Canada avoid an early exit when the business end of the World Cup kicks off.
