Australia have one foot in the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and can punch their ticket to the next round with a positive result against co-hosts United States on matchday two.
Despite being heavy underdogs, the Socceroos stunned Turkey in their first Group D game over the weekend, running out 2-0 winners in Vancouver following a masterful counter-attacking display.
But the USA, buoyed by their own victory last week, represent a different threat altogether and will prove another tough matchup for Tony Popovic’s men.
Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Australia’s second World Cup fixture…

Australia’s win against Turkey was their first in three games, though they are now unbeaten in their last 10 competitive matches stretching back into World Cup qualifying, winning their last five on the spin.
As co-hosts, the USA didn’t need to play qualifiers to enter the tournament, meaning their last competitive fixture prior to beating Paraguay came last July when they were beaten 2-1 by Mexico in the Gold Cup final. Since then, the Stars and Stripes have emerged victorious in six of their 11 matches, all against nations who are at this World Cup.
Head-to-head
This will be the first-ever meeting between Australia and the USA at a major tournament, though they do have some recent history having faced off in a friendly in October 2025.
On that occasion, Jordan Bos put the Socceroos ahead in Commerce City, before a brace from Haji Wright saw the Americans come from behind to claim a 2-1 win.
Australia’s only victory over the US came in their first meeting all the way back in 1992, when Warren Spink scored the only goal in an exhibition match in Orlando.
Team news
Australia are believed to have a clean bill of health as we approach gameday, though the USA have some injury headaches to deal with.
Star man Christian Pulisic, who was electric in the opening exchanges of their 4-1 win over Paraguay, was substituted at half-time with a calf problem, while Folarin Balogun was brought off as a precaution in the second half having already scored twice.
That could lead to Mauricio Pochettino shuffling his pack in attack, particularly if he feels fresh legs are vital to preserve his high-energy style.
Key talking points
What do Australia need to qualify for the knockout stages?
Australia will secure their spot in the round of 32 with a win. A draw might be enough come the end of matchday three, given the eight best third-placed teams also advance to the knockouts, though that is not a guarantee.
For those backing a perfect group-stage campaign, TAB has Australia priced at $15 to win all three of their group matches.
Another defensive masterclass needed
Popovic will feel no need to change his approach from the Turkey match to this one, and nor should he. The Socceroos were brave with their defending in Vancouver and managed to limit their opponents to plenty of speculative shots from range, putting their bodies on the line in order to take the three points.
Though the USA are maybe a tad weaker than Turkey on paper, they have laid down a marker at this World Cup already with their thrashing of Paraguay, and Australia will have to prepare themselves for further bombardment.
With both sides showing attacking quality and the USA likely to commit numbers forward, TAB has Both Teams to Score priced at $1.95.
Outlasting the opposition
The great surprise of that first USA performance was how much they looked like a prime Pochettino team, resembling the high-octane Tottenham and Southampton sides that built the foundation of his managerial career.
But it’s far from certain that the Americans will be able to play with such intensity and energy all tournament long. There’s every chance they start wilting as the match in Seattle, which will be played in the middle of the day at high temperatures in an open-air stadium, drags on into its closing stages. That’s when the opportunity could come for Australia to land their most powerful blows.
Prediction
It’s one of football’s oldest cliches, but the first goal in this contest will be crucial. Should it fall Australia’s way, it will make their defensive setup infinitely more effective and palatable, but they will struggle against this dynamic USA team if they are forced to open up in search of an equaliser.
That said, the Socceroos still pack plenty of punch, as best demonstrated by Nestory Irankunda’s marvellous debut World Cup performance and tribute to the legendary Tim Cahill. Australia are great value for a 1-1 draw with TAB pricing it at $4.
