Senegal vs Iraq Best Bets

Senegal to win & both teams to score — 7/4 - Senegal have conceded in both of their Group I matches, but their attacking quality and need for a big win to boost goal difference make a Senegal win with goals at both ends the most appealing bet in Toronto.

Senegal vs Iraq Match Preview

By Jack Ogalbe

Senegal know only victory over Iraq will do if they are to have any chance of prolonging their stay at the World Cup following defeats to France and Norway.

Pape Thiaw's team had their chances in the first half of their opening match against France but their wastefulness was ruthlessly punished after the break by Les Bleus, who ran out 3-1 winners. The Lions of Teranga then had 16 shots against the Norwegians but lost 3-2, leaving their qualification hopes hanging by a thread.

Senegal's squad boasts ample depth and experience, but they will likely need to record a sizeable win over Iraq in Toronto to go through as one of the eight best third-placed finishers. Iraq lost 4-1 to Norway before suffering a weather-disrupted 3-0 defeat to France, so they potentially require a victory by an even greater margin than Senegal to stand any chance of making the round of 32.

With goal difference key for both teams and considering their first two matches in the section, it stands to reason that the crowd in attendance at BMO Field should get an open and entertaining game. Group I was expected to be one of the most hotly contested at the finals and, given their qualities, Senegal should be in a stronger position than they find themselves in.

They were excellent in the first half against France but Didier Deschamps' tactical tweak at half-time, which allowed Michael Olise's creativity to shine through in a more central position, proved their undoing. An end-to-end game against Norway was decided by Erling Haaland's double and, having come into the tournament viewed as a team capable of causing upsets, the Lions of Teranga have played generally well but proved defensively vulnerable and wasteful in front of goal.

Iraq returned to the World Cup for the first time since 1986 and were always likely to find the section tough going. Graham Arnold's team have displayed good technique and looked tactically adept, but the attacking quality of Norway and France has, understandably, proved too difficult to cope with.

Senegal have conceded five times themselves and a win for the African nation in a game in which both teams score looks to be the most appealing bet in Toronto. An expansive contest should also suit Ismaila Sarr, who, after spurning three opportunities against France, including a golden one before the break, scored both of Senegal's goals in the defeat to Norway.

Both were clever finishes as he displayed smart footwork after receiving possession in awkward circumstances and he may be finding his best form a little too late to make a meaningful difference. Sarr's movement allows him to consistently find space in the opposition penalty area, making the Crystal Palace man a player to watch in the goalscorer markets.

Senegal vs Iraq Bet Builders

Bet Builder 1 — 4/1

  • Both teams to score - Senegal have conceded in both of their Group I matches.

  • Ismaila Sarr over 1.5 shots - The Crystal Palace man has registered nine shots in Senegal's first two group games.

  • Zaid Tahseen over 1.5 fouls - The Iraq defender has made three fouls at the finals and will have to stop a pacy Senegal frontline.

  • Senegal to win - Senegal are big favourites to win in Toronto and should justify that status.

Bet Builder 2 — 14/1

  • Merchas Doski to be shown a card - The Iraq left-back is a tough tackler and may get too close to Ismaila Sarr.

  • Ismaila Sarr anytime goalscorer - Sarr scored twice in Senegal's defeat to Norway and looked lively against France.

  • Over 2.5 goals - There have been three or more goals in all four matches in Group I.

  • El Hadji Malick Diouf over 0.5 fouls - The Senegal left-back has committed a foul in games against France and Norway.

Senegal vs Iraq Bet Builder Player Picks

Ismaila Sarr over 1.5 shots - Ismaila Sarr scored both of Senegal's goals against Norway and has had a team-high nine attempts on goal at the finals.

Aymen Hussein over 0.5 shots on target — 4/6 - Physical forward Aymen Hussein scored for Iraq in the defeat to Norway, his country's only effort on target at this tournament.

Merchas Doski to be shown a card — 13/5 - After six yellow cards for Viktoria Plzen this season, Merchas Doski's defending has been tidy but he could be troubled by Senegal's skilful forwards.

Sadio Mane to register an assist — 39/20 - Senegal's talisman has not been as influential as expected at the World Cup, but he still registered an assist against Norway.

Zaid Tahseen over 1.5 fouls — 13/20 - Zaid Tahseen has conceded three fouls at the tournament and Senegal's quick and technical attackers may prove an issue.
