Team News

Ivory Coast came through their 2-0 victory over Curacao on matchday three of the group stages with no fresh injury concerns, winning that match comfortably to finish second in Group E.

To this point, RB Leipzig forward Yan Diomande has been their standout performer, causing opposing defenders trouble down either flank and he will need to produce a similar display here if his team are to advance to the round of 16.

After seeing his side qualify for the knockout rounds with a game to spare, Norway head coach Ståle Solbakken decided to make 10 changes to his starting XI for their final group stage match against France.

Ultimately that decision led to a deflating 4-1 defeat, but, with his troops enjoying some much-needed rest as a result, he will feel justified in making that move if they advance here.

For the Scandinavians, wing-back Julian Ryerson remains their only potential doubt.

The stats

This will be the first ever meeting between Ivory Coast and Norway in any competition.

It is also the very first time that the Elephants have reached the knockout rounds of a World Cup.

As for Norway, this represents just their third foray into the knockout rounds of the competition, having lost each of their previous two such matches to Italy, in 1938 and 1998.

In more positive news for the Scandinavian side, they remain unbeaten at the World Cup against African teams, drawing 2-2 with Morocco in 1998 before beating Senegal 3-2 during this edition's group stage.

Solbakken's side will hope to avoid suffering successive international defeats for the first time since September 2022, having lost to France last time out.

Prediction

For many, this round of 32 clash between Ivory Coast and Norway is one of the most intriguing in the round of fixtures, as both sides produced some fantastic performances in their respective group campaigns.

An attacking, end-to-end match should be expected as a result and, if that happens, it arguably favours the Norwegians slightly.

With Manchester City superstar Erling Haaland upfront and Arsenal ace Martin Ødegaard pulling the strings in midfield, that pairing could prove to be the difference in this matchup.
