Team news
Germany have lost the services of central defender Nico Schlotterbeck for the rest of the tournament and Antonio Rudiger is set to continue at the heart of the defence as a result.
Nathaniel Brown missed the game against Ecuador, but he is expected be fit to start this round of 32 match.
Paraguay will be missing Diego Gomez through suspension. He picked up his second booking of the competition in the goalless draw with Australia last time out.
Miguel Almiron, however, will be back in the starting XI having served his own suspension. Elsewhere, Roman Sosa and Omar Alderete must be assessed ahead of the match to see if they are both fit to start.
The stats
Germany and Paraguay met in the last 16 of the 2002 World Cup. On that occasion, Oliver Neuville scored a late goal to seal a 1-0 win for the Germans.
The two teams have met only once since that clash, a 3-3 draw in September 2013.
Six of Germany’s last seven matches has featured both teams finding the back of the net.
Paraguay have scored at least once in seven of their previous eight international matches, only failing to score against Australia last time out.
Paraguay have won just two of their last eight World Cup matches, while Germany have not played a knockout tie at the World Cup since the 2014 final, when they defeated Argentina 1-0 to lift the trophy.
Deniz Undav has scored three goals for Germany at the tournament so far, despite not starting a single match.
Five of Germany’s last six victories have featured both teams scoring.
Prediction
Germany scored nine goals in their opening two matches to seal top spot in the group, but the 2-1 defeat to Ecuador will have let a sour taste in Julian Nagelsmann's mouth.
That was the fourth group stage defeat for Die Mannschaft across the last three tournaments, with the Germans having suffered just one group stage defeat between 1990 and 2014.
Paraguay regrouped following an opening-game loss to the USA, defeating Turkey 1-0 before drawing 0-0 with the Socceroos to secure their spot in the knockout stage.
Germany are in the tougher half of the draw, with a potential clash against France awaiting the winner of this one.
This match might be tighter than many expect, especially considering Germany's poor defensive record of late.
As such, expect Paraguay to battle hard and cause plenty of problems in the final third, but in the end Germany to progress to the last 16.
