England head into their final Group L fixture knowing victory should be enough to secure top spot and they can get the job done comfortably against an already-eliminated Panama side in New York.

Thomas Tuchel's men were frustrated by Ghana in a goalless draw on matchday two, but they remain unbeaten and still sit in pole position to finish first in the group.

The Three Lions looked far more convincing in their opening 4-2 success over Croatia and they should welcome the opportunity to face a Panama side lacking the quality of either of their previous opponents.

Panama have acquitted themselves well in narrow defeats to Ghana and Croatia, but they have failed to score in either match and now have nothing but pride to play for.

England, meanwhile, cannot afford to coast. If Ghana beat Croatia in the other group fixture, goal difference could become decisive and Tuchel will be eager to remove any doubt before the knockout rounds begin.

The gulf in quality between the squads is significant and England should create far more chances than they managed against Ghana's stubborn low block.

Team news

England are expected to rotate in a few positions with Reece James likely to be rested after suffering hamstring discomfort against Ghana. Djed Spence should come in at right-back, while Nico O'Reilly is expected to return on the left side of defence.

Declan Rice remains a doubt and could be protected ahead of the knockout stages, opening the door for Kobbie Mainoo or Jordan Henderson in midfield.

Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford are both pushing for starts after making positive impacts from the bench, while John Stones and Marc Guehi are favourites to start at centre-back.

Panama remain without influential midfielder Adalberto Carrasquilla and may once again rely on captain Anibal Godoy from the bench as they seek a first World Cup goal.

The stats

England have kept clean sheets in 11 of their last 12 competitive matches.

Thirteen of England's last 14 victories have come alongside a clean sheet.

Panama have lost all five of their World Cup matches.

Panama have failed to score in four of their five World Cup fixtures.

England won the previous World Cup meeting between the sides 6-1 in Russia in 2018.

Prediction

England were below their best against Ghana but that result should sharpen their focus rather than raise alarm bells.

Tuchel has built a side that remains extremely difficult to break down and Panama's lack of cutting edge suggests opportunities will be limited for the Central Americans. The bigger question is how many England can score.

The Three Lions have enough depth to freshen things up without weakening the side. Saka and Rashford could bring extra directness in wide areas, while Harry Kane remains one of the tournament's most reliable goalscorers.

Panama deserve credit for making life difficult for Ghana and Croatia, but both of those teams lack England's attacking firepower.

With group supremacy still not mathematically secured, there is every reason for Tuchel's men to keep pushing even if they establish an early lead.

A professional and convincing victory looks the most likely outcome.

Score Prediction: Panama 0-3 England
