Let’s be honest, no one saw this one coming, but Vozinha waited his whole life for this.
At 40 years old, playing for a country making its first-ever World Cup appearance, against the European champions, Cape Verde’s goalkeeper produced the kind of performance that turns a name into a tournament memory.
Spain had the ball. Spain had the territory. They had 27 shots, seven on target. They finished with around 75% possession and an expected goals total of 2.29. They still could not find a way past Cape Verde’s veteran No1. Vozinha made seven saves and kept the clean sheet in a 0-0 draw that instantly became one of the great World Cup underdog results.
Our Social Media post tells the story in one clean punch: seven saves, 1.5 goals prevented. One busy night, a lifetime worth of history.
There were saves from Pedri, Ferran Torres and Aymeric Laporte. There was another from Mikel Oyarzabal. Then Mikel Merino. Then Marc Cucurella. Spain kept loading the box, kept shifting the angle, kept asking a different question. Vozinha kept giving the same answer.
This was not a one-man scramble either. Cape Verde defended with discipline, protected the middle of the pitch and refused to lose their shape. But when Spain finally did break through, Vozinha was there. Calm when he needed to hold. Explosive when he needed to fly.
The history makes it bigger. Vozinha became the oldest goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet at the World Cup. He also did it on Cape Verde’s World Cup debut, giving the island nation its first-ever point on the biggest stage.
His own story only adds weight to the night. Vozinha, full name Josimar José Évora Dias, plays for Chaves in Portugal and began his professional career late, at 25. He has been Cape Verde’s goalkeeper for more than a decade, but this was the night the wider football world finally met him.
After the final whistle, he was emotional, speaking about family, sacrifice and a dream that had taken years to reach. That emotion landed because the performance had already earned it.
Spain will look at the numbers and wonder how they failed to win. Cape Verde will look at Vozinha and know exactly why they did not lose. Next time you think it's too late to start something, think again. This goalie just peaked at 40!
