Manchester United are considering a move for Borussia Dortmund centre-back Waldemar Anton, reports the Mirror.
United are expected to strengthen in defence this summer as the club look to build upon their third-placed finish.
The Manchester giants pipped Aston Villa and Liverpool to third last season, and secured a return to the Champions League in the process.
And the club are keen to build upon their return to Europe’s elite club competition as they look to add bodies in a key area.
Centre-back an area of concern
Anton has emerged as a potential defensive target for Michael Carrick’s side as the 44-year-old weighs up his squad options.
Carrick was named United head coach last month, penning a two-year deal at Old Trafford after a successful stint following his appointment as Ruben Amorim’s replacement in January.
Centre-back is an area in need of investment given Matthijs de Ligt’s ongoing injury issues and Lisandro Martinez’s disciplinary concerns.
Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven are inexperienced options for Carrick, who is looking to add a seasoned head to the backline.
29-year-old Anton, who is part of the Germany team for the 2026 World Cup, has been a first-team regular for Borussia Dortmund following his arrival from VfB Stuttgart in 2024.
Competition for German centre-back
The centre-back is contracted to the German side until 2028, and with just two years left to run on his current deal, United may push to sign Anton this summer.
However, United would face competition in the race to sign Anton should Dortmund consider a sale.
Fellow Premier League side Villa are reportedly keen on adding the German to the ranks, while La Liga giants Atletico Madrid have previously been credited with an interest in the Dortmund man.
Anton has ample competition for a starting spot at the heart of the Germany defence in North America this summer.
Centre-backs Antonio Rudiger, Jonathan Tah, Malick Thiaw and Dortmund teammate Nico Schlotterbeck have all made Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany squad for the World Cup.
