A Bayern Munich centre-back has emerged as a Liverpool target as the Reds consider Marc Guehi alternatives, reports The Mirror.
Liverpool came close to signing Guehi from Crystal Palace on deadline day and despite agreeing a fee with the Eagles for the centre-back, the south London side pulled the plug at the last minute.
Palace’s failure to secure a replacement for Guehi meant the Premier League champions failed to bring in the England international.
Guehi, whose contract expires at the end of the season, will leave the club next summer after Palace boss Oliver Glasner confirmed that the 25-year-old won’t sign a new deal.
“I think Marc has already told us that he doesn’t sign a new contract, so he will leave next year,” Glasner said earlier this month.
Bayern among those interested in Guehi
Liverpool are expected to return for Guehi, either in the New Year or next summer, but they face competition to sign the former Chelsea trainee.
Guehi is free to sign a pre-contract with overseas sides in the New Year, with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich previously credited with an interest in the defender.
Bayern are considering Guehi and Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck as they assess centre-back options.
The German side may well lose one of their centre-backs in the summer, with Dayot Upamecano, like Guehi, out of contract at the end of the season.
Reds consider Upamecano as Guehi alternative
Bayern are eager to tie the Frenchman down to a new deal, but German publication Bild reports that talks are at an impasse.
Upamecano is seeking improved terms to put pen to paper for FC Hollywood, however negotiations between player and club have stalled.
Liverpool have since emerged as a potential destination for Upamecano should both parties fail to agree terms on a new contract.
Guehi, though, remains the priority for Liverpool, who have also previously been linked with Schlotterbeck.
Upamecano’s situation, meanwhile, is being monitored by Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Chelsea as the trio eye up the France international.
Liverpool splashed the cash in the summer market
Liverpool spent big over the summer to strengthen in attack, bringing in Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak.
The champions also signed Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong, while Giovanni Leoni joined to strengthen the side at the back.
Leoni, who arrived from Parma, is expected to miss the rest of the season, however, having suffered an ACL injury on his Reds debut as Liverpool claimed a 2-1 EFL Cup win over Championship side Southampton last month.
