Lyon vs PSG: Match Preview and Team News

All eyes will be on the Groupama Stadium this Sunday as Lyon host Paris Saint-Germain in one of the standout fixtures of the Ligue 1 weekend.

PSG arrive as league leaders on 24 points, and Lyon sit in sixth, just four points behind. A win for Lyon this weekend would close the gap on PSG to within a single point and throw the title race wide open.

With both teams boasting plenty of firepower, this game has the makings of a proper League 1 showdown.

Team form

Luis Enrique’s PSG have been in impressive form so far, having won seven of their eleven games and going unbeaten in their first four games of the season.

But that run was halted by a narrow 1-0 defeat to second-placed Marseille – PSG’s only loss of the season.

Their best result of the 2025/26 campaign came in a stunning 6-3 away win over Toulouse, where Joao Neves stole the show with a hat-trick.

Lyon have had a slightly more up-and-down start to the season. Paulo Fonseca’s team began with three straight victories – 1-0 against Lens, 3-0 against Mertz, and 1-0 against Marseille – before a 3-1 loss to Rennes stopped their momentum.

In total, they have recorded six wins, three defeats (to Rennes, Toulouse, and Nice), and two draws, which came most recently against Paris FC and Brest.

Head-to-head

Across their last 50 meetings, PSG hold the upper hand with 26 wins compared to Lyon’s 15, while nine encounters have ended in draws.

PSG have dominated in recent history between the two, winning each of the past five clashes. Meanwhile, Lyon’s last victory came during the 2022/23 season, and their last home win was back in 2019.

PSG’s biggest result in the last 50-game period was a 5-0 thrashing in 2018.

Goals will most certainly be on the cards, especially with the attacking prowess of PSG. The last time this fixture ended in a goalless draw was in 2020.

Team news

Enrique will be without Desire Doue, who remains sidelined with a thigh injury. However, Ousmane Dembele has returned to training and could be available for selection.

Defensively, Ilya Zabarnyi will return to the squad after serving a red card suspension, strengthening the team’s backline.

Fonseca will also be missing key players for this clash. Fofana has been ruled out for several months with an ankle injury, while Hans Hateboer will be serving a suspension after his red card in the recent draw against Brest.

These absences are a big defensive blow for Lyon, leaving them vulnerable against PSG’s attack.

Key stats

  • PSG score an average of 1.9 goals per game, whereas Lyon have slightly less with a 1.5 average.

  • PSG concede less than one goal per game (0.8), meanwhile Lyon concede an average of 1.1 per game.

  • Lyon have significantly fewer shots on target per game, with 4.4 compared to PSG’s 6.6.

  • In the last 10 years, PSG have scored three or more goals against Lyon on 11 occasions.

Prediction

Considering PSG’s attacking power, their unbeaten record against Lyon in recent years, and their form so far this season, it is likely that the visitors will come out on top.
