Every Club to Win the Champions League
Encouraged by Gabriel Hanot, editor of French sports newspaper L’Equipe, UEFA founded the European Cup in Paris in 1955, initially calling it the European Champion Clubs’ Cup.
Sixteen clubs took part in the inaugural 1955/56 edition, with Real Madrid beating Reims 4-3 in the final at Paris’ Parc des Princes.
Madrid dominated the early years of the European Cup, winning each of the first five editions, before Benfica broke their stranglehold to claim back-to-back crowns in the early 60s.
Since then, 21 more clubs from 10 countries have lifted the trophy, with Marseille the first to do so in its guise as the Champions League in 1993.
