Newcastle welcome Manchester City to St James’ Park on Saturday evening with the aim of getting closer to the top 10 having been stuck in the bottom half after a stuttering start to the season.

However, a win is a big ask with Pep Guardiola’s side in great form and Erling Haaland so difficult to contain.

Team news

Newcastle will be able to call on Anthony Gordon who is back following a hip injury, while Nick Pope has been cleared to play after suffering a concussion at Brentford last time out.

Dan Burn is suspended following his red card against the Bees while fellow defender Tino Livramento is a doubt having been sidelined with a knee issue since September.

Man City are still without Rodri, who is struggling with a hamstring problem having missed a huge amount of last season with an ACL tear.

Fellow midfielder Mateo Kovacic is also sidelined until the New Year following ankle surgery.

The stats

Newcastle have won just one of their last 35 league meetings with Manchester City (drawing six, losing 28).

City have won 12 Premier League away games against Newcastle, their joint-most away victories against an opponent in the competition.

Newcastle have lost their last two league games but have opened the scoring in both.

Man City have scored in each of their last 33 Premier League games against Newcastle.

Prediction

Newcastle have endured two disappointing away defeats in the Premier League this month when losing 3-1 at West Ham and Brentford, so they will be glad to get back to St James’ Park this weekend.

However, in Manchester City, they could not have asked for a more difficult opponent.

The Magpies have a horrendous record against the Cityzens in recent times, managing just one victory in the last 35 games, and now face a side who are pushing Arsenal at the top of the table.

Guardiola’s men have won seven of their last eight matches in all competitions and earned a convincing 3-0 victory over champions Liverpool just before the international break.

If facing City was not rough enough for a Newcastle side eager to climb out of the bottom half of the table this month, they come up against a player in Haaland who is in incredible scoring form.

The striker has only failed to find the net for club and country in two games this season.

It is hard to see any other outcome than City earning another three points and Haaland getting on the scoresheet at some point.
