Brazil v Haiti Preview: Selecao to take out their frustrations on Grenadiers
By James Mason
Although a 1-1 draw against Morocco is not the start to the World Cup Brazil were looking for, it is not a bad result in the grand scheme of things and the five-time world champions will not be hitting the panic button before they face Haiti in Group C.
Let's not forget, Morocco are the reigning Afcon champions, albeit in controversial circumstances after Senegal were stripped of the title after winning the final, and they are now on a 24-game unbeaten run, last tasting defeat in August 2025. A share of the spoils against the African nation would be classed as a positive result for several nations. The issue is that Brazil are no ordinary country and high expectations mean they head into every contest expected to win.
If Brazil needed an opportunity to rack up a few goals and increase the confidence levels, then a clash against minnows Haiti provides exactly that and this could end up being a long 90 minutes for the Caribbean nation at Lincoln Financial Field. Haiti had their chances in the 1-0 defeat to Scotland and they could have easily ended up with a share of the spoils, but they were made to rue their missed opportunities and are facing a battle to make it out of the group.
A lack of cutting edge is a concern for Sebastien Migne's side but so is a shaky defence and one clean sheet in their last five matches does little to suggest they can cope with Carlo Ancelotti's men. Brazil will be desperate to put in a more polished attacking performance and Ancelotti could decide to make tweaks to his starting XI, potentially replacing the likes of Igor Thiago and Lucas Paqueta.
And it is not like Ancelotti has a lack of options to choose from, with Endrick, Luiz Henrique, Gabriel Martinelli, Rayan and Matheus Cunha all eager to be handed a starting opportunity. Brazil have scored in nine consecutive games and they have recorded some big wins during that period, beating South Korea 5-0 and Panama 6-2 while also putting three past Croatia in a 3-1 success.
There have been more than three goals in four of those nine matches and with Brazil needing a big result to appease any doubters from that Morocco stalemate, this could turn into a high-scoring affair. Of the potential changes Ancelotti could make, bringing in Manchester United forward Cunha instead of Paqueta, who struggled to make an impact in the opening match, looks to be one of the most likely.
Cunha scored ten times for the Red Devils in the 2025-26 Premier League season and it is notable that three of those goals came in his last four appearances, so he headed to the World Cup in high spirits. It was perhaps a surprise to see the 27-year-old left out of the starting XI for the first game, but a recall could be on the cards and his powerful running along with his eye for goal could see him make a positive impact.
