For Austria international David Alaba (34), an interesting transfer option could open up after his departure from Real Madrid.
Il Messaggero reports that the centre-back has emerged as a target for Serie A side Lazio Rome. They are among the clubs looking for a new central defender after Alessio Romagnoli (31) left on Thursday. He has joined Al-Sadd in Qatar.
Speaking as Lazio look for reinforcements while the transfer window is shut in many top leagues, sporting director Angelo Fabiani said: "The market for out-of-contract players is still open. I preferred to keep a few places in the squad free in order to monitor such situations closely." According to Il Messaggero, though, their attempts to sign Alaba are not yet concrete.
Lazio have started the season well. They have won both of their opening Serie A matches without conceding and sit sixth in the table. New coach Gennaro Gattuso's side beat Bologna and Genoa 1-0. Denmark international Oliver Provstgaard (23) and former Bundesliga player Danilo Doekhi (28) started together at centre-back.
Alaba fits Lazio's criteria for an available player. The former Bayern professional's contract with Real expired in June after five years. He has been searching for a new club ever since. Despite plenty of rumours, he has not found one yet. Most recently, he was also linked with Al-Sadd and MLS champions Inter Miami. In May, it was also said that Red Bull Salzburg were interested in bringing him back.
Alaba (117 caps for Austria) showed at the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico that he is still fit and in form after constant injury problems in the summer: There he led the Austria team as captain and played in every match, including the elimination against eventual winners Spain in the last 32.
Across a large part of his career, Alaba wore the Bayern Munich shirt and won 10 German championships and the Champions League twice with the Reds, among other honours. He then joined Madrid on a free transfer in 2021, a move that was not without controversy. At Los Blancos, he lifted the trophy with the big ears twice more, but in December 2023 he also suffered a serious knee injury that kept him out for more than a year. Overall, he has missed 109 matches for club and country since the 2023/24 season.
