Thomas Tuchel's England have the task of trying to beat co-hosts Mexico
  • Mexico have won all four matches at this World Cup

  • England came from behind to beat DR Congo 2-1 in the last 32

  • Brazil and Norway both secured 2-1 victories in their last-32 ties

There are two more last-16 ties to get stuck into on Sunday evening and into the early hours of Monday, with both Brazil and England in action.

Brazil face Norway in what promises to be an enthralling encounter at MetLife Stadium, with the winner of that match taking either Mexico or England, who meet in the last 16.

Co-hosts Mexico have been in terrific form and they will fancy their chances of defeating the Three Lions, who had to dig deep to record a 2-1 comeback win over DR Congo in the last 32.

Norway vs Brazil

Having picked up wins over Iraq (4-1) and Senegal (3-2), Norway manager Stale Solbakken opted to rest his key performers for the final group clash against France as qualification was already assured.

Despite going down 4-1 to Les Bleus, the Red, White and Blue came out on top in expected goals and the scoreline would have likely been closer had they been at full strength.

When restoring his key players to the starting XI for the last-32 clash against the Ivory Coast, Norway showcased their class once more in a 2-1 victory to set up this mouth-watering last-16 tie.

Brazil needed a last-gasp Gabriel Martinelli goal to get past Japan in the last round and Carlo Ancelotti’s men have failed to convince at the tournament so far.

The five-time world champions have injured concerns over Raphinha, Lucas Paqueta and Casemiro, which looks a huge blow considering the running power and pace in the Norway side.

Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard could have the biggest impact on this last-16 contest and Norway look overpriced to win in 90 minutes.

Score prediction: Brazil 1-2 Norway

Mexico vs England

Much has been made of Mexico’s imperious record at the Azteca Stadium and the altitude advantage (2,200 metres of elevation) they could have over England.

El Tri have won 70, drawn 17 and lost twice in 89 competitive games at the Azteca, and while that record has to be respected, it may have been overplayed by the market.

Ancient home successes have little relevance to a 2026 World Cup contest with England and the quality of opposition that Mexico have been facing is a long way off the level of the Three Lions.

Javier Aguirre’s men registered expected goals numbers of just 1.05 and 0.53 in World Cup wins over Ecuador and South Korea and those are certainly not outstanding figures.

El Tri are heavily reliant on Raul Jimenez to get the goals, while England can call on Ballon d'Or contender Harry Kane in attack.

Thomas Tuchel is working with a far stronger squad and that looks a far bigger factor than altitude and home advantage.

Of course, England have not been entirely convincing, but they impressed in a 4-2 victory over Croatia in their opener and that looks like strong form considering the effort of Zlatko Dalic’s men in their last-32 loss to Portugal.

Tuchel’s men have recorded expected goals numbers of 3.20, 1.36, 1.56 and 2.16 in their four World Cup matches.

At the same time, England conceded only 10 shots on target and the numbers suggest they should have been more comfortable winners in their four matches.

Score prediction: Mexico 1-2 England
