UEFA Nations League FAQ
How often is the Nations League?
The UEFA Nations League takes place every two years.
How does the Nations League work?
The Nations League divides UEFA's 55 member associations into four leagues—Leagues A, B, C, and D—based on their UEFA coefficient rankings. Each league is further split into groups where teams play each other home and away during the league phase. The top two teams from each group in League A advance to the quarter-finals, with the winners of those ties progressing to the Nations League Finals—a knockout tournament to crown the overall champion. Promotion and relegation between leagues are determined by final standings in their groups. The format also includes play-offs and ties that influence qualification for major tournaments like the UEFA European Championship and the FIFA World Cup. Why was the Nations League created?
The Nations League was launched in 2018 to replace low-stakes international friendlies with competitive matches. The Nations League also offers opportunities for teams to earn promotion, relegation, and qualification spots for major tournaments such as the World Cup and European Championships.
How do teams qualify for the Nations League?
Qualification for the Nations League is based on the UEFA national team coefficient rankings, which rank teams based on recent performances in UEFA competitions and qualifiers. These rankings determine the league and group allocations. Unlike traditional tournaments, teams do not have to qualify through separate qualifying rounds; their position in the Nations League is automatically assigned based on their coefficient.
What is the difference between the UEFA Nations League and the Euros?
The Nations League is a competition held every two years that was launched to replace friendlies with competitive matches, featuring promotion and relegation between leagues. It also offers an additional route for teams to qualify for the Euros through play-offs. By contrast, the Euros is a major tournament held every four years which features a final tournament where qualified teams compete to be crowned European champions.
